My best suggestion is your local library will have a manual. They are free to check out. Most libraries now have them online. You shouldn't have to take the whole dash out. You can get to it from under the dash on the passenger side.

You have an easy one. Follow the heater hose to the firewall. Remove them. remove the bolts holding the core in place and pull out the core. Reinstall. Newer ones, you have to remove the entire dash.

I need instruction on replacing heater core in a 1998 dodge dakotain picture form along with words


i just pulled my heater core from my 97 dakota. first pull the negitive cble from the battery next start with pulling all the plastic from the dash and kick pannels. Next yu need ti pull the bolts from the dash and under the dash. third drop the stering wheel and let it set in the seat. Forth you need to pull your heater hose lines loose from the heater core and your evaporater from the cooler. next you need to pull the passenger side of the dash out about one and a half feet to get the heater box out and to put it back together go in rev the way you took it out.

The fan is on and the heat is turned on just not getting hot


You should check a few things here.

Check the hoses going into the heater core from the back of teh engine (underneath the throttle body).

Check the Thermostat guage and make sure it is not faulty.

Replace the coolant in your car. (undo the plug at the bottom of the radiator and let the fluid drain out) Once drained close the plug and then fill it back up with approved coolant)

Run the car until hot (about 15 mins and then see if there is any hot air coming out)

Bad news will be if your heater core is busted. You shouldn;t wait too long to check this out as a busted heated core (clogged) will eventuallu force the seals open and you will get coolant leaking into your car.

If it is your heater core these are steps i followed to replace mine:

Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

Disconnect the top and bottom hoses from the heater core next to the firewall)

Pull off the steering wheel
Undo the steering wheel bolt.
Undo the 3 screws holding the steering wheel cover in place, unclick them and put to the side.
Undo the centre console
Undo the glove box - you'll need to manipulate the stops on the inside and let it fall to the floor before - undo the two bolts at the bottom.
Remove the Instrument panel, radio, radio frame.
Undo the single screw in the bottom of the casing surrounding the vents control, gently pop out the vent plate.
Undo the 4 screws holding the vents controls in place.
Remove the frames that are holding the vent controls in place (either side of the centre colsoles (or where they were)
Remove the two side vents (push down and pull back).
Remove the two bolts (either side) that are holding the dash up.
Remove the two bolts (bottom left corner, bottom right corner) that are holding the dash up.
Gently pull the dash up and forward to (making sure you don't pull any wires off there guides and place to the side).

Put the dash to the side (resting on the front seat)

The heater core should be sitting in the middle of the dash.

Remove the four bolts (two top, two bottom) and place to the side.

Pull the heater core back and move to the side to clear the holes in the firewall.

Manipulate the heater core to the side and move out through the gap in the dash and the cross bar (it is a tight squeeze but you can get it out)

Installation is the reverse of all the instructions.

when you have finished installing the heater core make sure you bleed the engine with coolant

Top up the radiator - keep the cap off, turn on the engine, turn on the heater on the heater to full, with the engine running keep topping up the radiator as the water runs through the new core...keep doing this until no more water goes through - this last step takes a while so be patient otherwise you will start to drive the car and will have an overheating engine very quickly...

Replacment of heater core on 01 chevy S-10


Have replaced my heater core in my 2001 regular cab 4wd in december 2009. Had to pull the complete dash including the complete metal dash behind the dash that you see. Also had to remove the right passenger side inner fender well to acess the remaining two bolts that hold the heater core cover to the firewall. Its an insane job to do but the repair shop books call for 9 1/2 hrs to do the job. I'm not an expert but this is what it takes.

Replace heater core in 1988 Ford Ranger


allow the system to cool down

take radiator cap loose to release pressure

once pressure is released tighten cap

loosen clamps on the heater hoses in the engine compartment on the pass. side of firewall.

plug or cap off the heater core tubes to prevent spillage when you pull it into the truck

place a trash bag on floorboard in case spillage occurs

remove the five screws holding the heatre core access cover, three on top and two on bottom

carefully pull heater core back and down and remove it from the dash

install is reverse

I have a 2000 1500, but from what I can see it is the same fix. You need to pull dash forward. 2 bolts behind kick panels one on either side. Screws along top windshield I believe there are 6. Detach steering shaft. (lay down on drivers side facing up. 2 bolts hold in place) This should allow entire dash to tilt towards seats. Heater core is passenger side. You will see 2 metal lines going through firewall. This is your heater core lines. Detach these from rubber hoses inside engine compartment.

Here's where you can follow the book, or do it the easy way... The book says you need to remove the ENTIRE dash and discharge A/C unit before removing.... I have a way better fix.

With a hacksaw cut the metal lines off the top of the heater core (its already junk so don't worry). Pull up on heater core to remove. Now the tricky part. With the hacksaw, cut through the plastic housing. Start far right and cut down until you meet the natural break in the 2 pieces of plastic. Now start another cut on the far left of the housing and again cut straight down. You are creating a door for the new heater core to install. ***Save this piece of plastic housing as you will need it***.

Install new heater core and then use JB Weld to fasten "door" back into place. This should save you about $300 and hours of time. Have fun...
