Question about 1992 Oldsmobile Silhouette

1 Answer

I bought a 1992 Silhouette back 2007. Last year the head gaskets went because they said the van overheated. we had no warning light that said there was a problem. He said maybe the fans were not coming on like they to cool things down. Had radiator fluid going where it shouldn't of went. So 1800.00 later I got it fix. Tuesday I was taking the grandkids to school and first time the little box says Hot Engine/ Coolant. Can my daughter to go get ck and was inform it's the head gasket again 1300.to1600.00 dollars. I said how can that be and he sasid the only thing that could the problem with the head gasket is overheating the engine. I said we got no warning but yesterday and we stopped driving the van and took it in right away. Sometimes there is not warning. When we least got it fix they told us to ck the overflow and if there fluid we're ok. Which my daughter did all the time. Even when we brought it in it can 1/2 cantainer full of fluid. So I'm confused . Any answers or help. Rhonda

Check temp. sensor that screws into the block. It could be bad or wires disconnected.

I have a 1992 Lincoln town car and i would like to know how do you remove the reservoir coolant tank from that car?

definitely something else causing the overheating. If the radiator has not been replaced in the last 5-10 years then the cores are probably blocked . Have a compression test done to check for head gasket and cracked head/s. If you have a viscous fan hub then replace it as it is no 1 problem if the overheating was occurring at lights , slow traffic, or pulling at slow speed up hills

Sometimes the head gasket blows from too much back pressure caused by blocked exhaust or cat. convertor. This will happen if the heads were not checked for warpage & cracks. Also if poor quality head gaskets were used &/or improper torquing precedure, this problem will occur. It may be wise to get a complete long block that has been rebuilt & warranted for at least a year. Make sure you have no exhaust restrictions because antifeeze in the exhaust will wreck the cat. convertor. Good luck with your rebuild!

clean and degreese the engine from the top to the bottom. fill the radiator and start the van let it idle for at least 20 min and look for a leak. if no leak present look at the tail pipe smoke. if smoke is white you have a bad head gasket. Also check oil to see if it"s milky

One guess is there is air in the cooling system. The air pockets will cause temporary overheating (fluctuating guage).

It sounds like a bad head gasket is creating these air pockets.

Last week my van 88 plymouth voyager over heated, now it will not start and others are telling either it has no compression or the timing went or needs to be readjusted, please help

Your nearest mechanic might have a compression tester/meter to verify it. Sometimes it depends on the degree of overheating that will cause damage to the top gasket and piston rings. A warped engine head is likely also.
