96 Volvo 850 Turbo. Both headlights went out but the high beams work if I hold the switch back. Turn lights and running lights still work. Tested power to the fuse box and no power to high or low beams..checked power to the relay switch and it appears there is power getting to the light relay..any ideas?

Hi, the switch seems to work fine for the parking lights..the wires seem fine and I have attempted to replace the bulbs wich should have wiggled this part enough to caus them to work if this was the culprit.

Hi, the problem you are having is with the switch itself, this is a common problem so the switch is not expensive to buy.

once you replace the switch the lights will work as normal.

if it was just one light not working then you could say bulb if the high beam wasnt working then you could say it was fuse or relay but as you have high beam this would rule out them being the fault.

now the only other problem it could be is a wire so give the wires a bit of a wiggle at the back of the head lights then give them a try if they then work you may need to do some soldering to fix a loose wire but if they still dont work then this would suggest the switch itself is at fault.

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

if you have checked the fuse and bulbs then it would rule out them being at fault but inside the switch is metal contacts and these ware over time and you lose the connection when switching the lights on.

check if the back lights come on as well if these are off also then it would be switch or fuse.

Now their is one other culprit that you might have, if say one of the back lights has got condensation or water inside the lense then this can cause corrosion to build up on the contacts where the bulbs are pushed into now this can cause the problem you are having, so i would remove both back lights and have a good look at all the bulb holders and the circuit these bulb holders are attatched to as you could have corrosion built up and this can cause the problem you are having, its less likely to be corrosion in the front lights as its not like the back lights as the back have a little circuit that runs from each bulb holder and then goes to the block connector where the wires are so have a look their first, if you find corrosion you can clean it off and your lights should work but you will need to replace which ever unit is letting water in as it will keep happening.

let me know what you find out ok

check your headlight fuse with the switch in the on position. easiest way I have found to rule out a relay is to simply switch it out with another relay.

You can check 2 things. 1., have someone in the car to turn the key to the start position. Tap the starter with a small hammer and see if it cranks. If it does, replace the starter. 2., have the battery tested as well as the connections to the battery. Corrosion builds and can cause heavy resistance to heavy loads(like starting). These are the 2 most likely causes. Let me know if you need further assistance.

96 Volvo 850 Turbo. All exterior and interior lights not working except for high beams which work only when the switch is held back

I hate to ask, but are you sure the headlight switch on the dash to the left of the steering wheel near the door is in the 'up', or headlights on, position when you do this? If it's not and the exterior lights that are on are just the daytime running lights, then this is how it's supposed to work so that you can "flash to pass" other drivers. On the other hand, if it is in the correct position, try pulling back further until you get the 'click'. If there is no click, then the little piece of plastic inside is worn and needs to be replaced.

Hope this helps!

Turn signals quit working??

Good place to start is to check bulbs. Also, have multifunction switch and its circuits tested. The multifunction switch is the blinker arm, and the components it attaches to inside the steering column. Usually tied in with things like high beams, headlight dimmer/daytime running lights, wipers, cruise, etc.

There is a relay that controls the headlights, volvo calls it a step relay. You will have to check that power is getting to this relay. If not, check all fuses and wiring. If power supply checks out ok, you may have to replace the relay. Let me know if you need any more info or a wiring diagram.

Issue with dash lights dimming while driving,

If the battery and alternator tested fine. I would have the charging system rechecked when engine is hot and at high rpm's. This way the checks are being done as if you were driving and driving for a long time. Alternators can work fine when cold but weaken when hot or stop working. This problem is not rare but only is seen occassionly. Unless it was checked at an electrical shop the average shop doesn't run these tests for they don't see the problem often enough to automaticly run them at all times. Good luck and let me know how you make out.

Head lights on 1990 jeep wrangle won't work

Ckeck the headlight connections they are notorious for corroding. Check the ground connection for the lights. Pull your dimmer switch back as if you were flashing a car to pass and see if they work there. If they do you have a dimmer switch problem.
