Question about 1999 Volvo V70

3 Answers

1999 volvo v70 awd xc. Trouble code p1618. Symptoms are it wont start. LImp mode? Seems that after testing and resetting codes, we turn the key, it starts as normal for about 3 seconds, then dies. Trying to start it again results in no real "ignition" allowed. Seems computer is telling fuel pump to stop or some relay. Tested and bypassed relay. same same. Pump operating normally. Only other issue is the up-arrow light is flashing on the dash sometimes (and check engine). The flashing arrow light is usually just solid at start, then disappears entirely. But before this no-starting happened, it would just flash. Sounds like ECM issues, right? but what sensors and what computers are culprit? Where to look. How to test. I heard there is a separate sensor for transmission. Speaking of which, mechanics say we need to rebuild the torque converter anyway or it'll ruin the tranny more. The guy above (another 99 v70 p1618 issue) was fixed just by replacing the tranny? Some voltage issue with the computer? All related? dumfounded. please help.

I got the same car as urs. its seems to me that its the classic problems that you have. To slove them. Dont go to a dealer, coz they ll rip u off. Now, check on DIY guide for uninstalling ABS moudle. Go to ebay, find urself a ABS Moudle rebuild. 60-80bugs. put it back on. It ll slove ur limb home mode, speed meter drop to 0 when driving. flashing arrow. Contact volvo, buy urself a new ignition antena ring, 50bugs. and once again. look for DIY guide for installation. I replace both of them myself for less than an hour. u might need to buy some special torx for abs moudle tho. but it wont be a big deal. Hope it helps you.

If that is your only code and you do not have any ABS intermittent issues then it is a transmission related issue. Trans faults will cause the limp mode but not a starting issue. If you have an abs issue with this code it will cause the speedo issue and the limp issue but not starting issue. Re check OBD and ABS for fault codes and repost.

Error code P0785 on Volvo V70 XC -00. What's the problem? I have also error code P1618.

P0785 - Shift/Timing Solenoid Malfunction (3-2 shift solenoid is not working properly)
P1618 - Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) in another control module (in this case, in the Trans Module)

Flush the transmission, get any software upgrades available, reset the adaptors and try it, nothing to lose.

If it doesn't work you will need a transmission. Solenoids are internal, that's what controls the shifts.
They could be faulty or the valve body but one should always do what I said once, if it doesn't fix it, you're looking at a transmission.

The resetting of adaptors is crucial if you update the software. It's basically wiping the memory of the TCU (transmission controller) and teaching it how to shift properly again.

Also could check this TSB...

The reason why I ask, is because anytime there are MULTIPLE transmission solenoid codes, its usually the result of a failed ignition switch. However, since only two codes appeared and were one at a time, I think at this point, its unlikely the result of an ignition switch failure.

P0785 is for the 3-2 downshift solenoid. Either the solenoid is faulty, or something got damaged while the 1-2 solenoid was being replaced. (connector knocked loose, wire rubbing on pan or valvebody, etc...).

The 3-2 solenoid is #394 in the picture below, which is at the opposite end of the 1-2 solenoid.

P0785 is for the 3-2 solenoid and that is 394 in the picture. Is it likely to fix it? yes, but of course I cannot guarantee that it will, sitting behind my computer and never seeing the vehicle.

Hope this helps.

My 1999 xc v70 awd volvo wagon has a rear brake getting hot

the first thing you want to check is whether or not it has a heavy drag at the wheel caused by wrong pads, sticking caliper, improperly installed parts. Lift the car and try to turn the wheel. Just because they are certified does not mean they know everything. I'm certified too, but I also have experience with euros and the quality of parts that need to be used. If inferior quality parts are used it will cause this. It can create all kinds of problems and noises. Take it back until they get it right. Ask them what brand of parts they use. Let me know and if they give you any grief, contact me and I will advise accordingly.

you can do that since you already replace the cat, however the problem may be some where else like maf sensor, intake leaks faulty plugs, coils or fuel injectors

Sound like a possible leak or you have a bad injector. You will not be able to lokk under the car for any leaks due the fuel will evaporate, you will need to start the car and look at the fuel rail while it's running. If it is not that check your fuel filters. If your lines do not have addaquate fuel pressue due to a leak or a dirty filter, it could cause those symptoms...

Good luck!

Volvo V70 xc AWD '98 - fuel filter change

Brandonlo168,

The fuel filter can be located under the carpeted cargo storage floor at the rear of the wagon. Remove the four 10mm bolts, remove the cover. You will then see a removeable plate to the right just behind the rear passenger seat. Fuel filter can be seen through hole in hole. Replaced from underneath wagon. Be sure to make sure lines are fully inserted onto filter. Check for leaks. No smoking, extinguisher handy. Note arrow on filter for correct fuel flow.
