Question about 2001 Toyota Sequoia

1 Answer

2001 Toyota Sequoia 2WD has a low idle (about 530) and stalls occasionally when stopped or having stopped at an intersection. I replaced the spark plugs, air filter, oil and oil filter. The check engine light and Trac (traction control) lights went off after that self-service repair, but the stalling continues occasionally. Today the check engine and Trac lights came back on. Any advice or feedback is appreciated!

I'll take it to a local parts store and see what code comes up and report back. It might be a few days before I'm able to do that.

Apparently, parts stores used to do free code checks, but don't anymore. Looks like I'll have to buy a $40 code reader to know for sure.

    What is "I A C"?

A friend suggested I simply clean the throttle body. Does that sound reasonable?

AutoZone is still doing it for free. I hope this would help.

I called the local O'Reilly's, Auto Zone and Napa. None of them do the free check anymore they said. I guess they weren't selling any code readers by offering that service for free. Today I got a referral to a guy who has an auto shop who should be able to read the code for me. I'll update again when I make more progress. Thanks!

if this is happening when the foot is on the brake, then it is possible that the brake booster is leaking air and running the engine too lean.

Reset obd on 2001 sequoia

The stalling is usually caused by carbon deposits in the throttle body, try remoioving the air intake tube from the throttle body, block the throttle plate open and use a small brush and some air intake/throttle body cleaner to clean the carbon out, do this with the battery negative cable off, reconnect everything and go drive it for about 15 minutes this usually restores the idle to normal.

When I come to a stop my Sequoia stalls. When I put it in neutral or park it starts right back up, but as soon as you shift into gear it stalls. If I increase rpms then shift into gear will drive and...

Stalling is normally caused by a problem with
A) Lack of air - check your air filter
B) Lack of fuel - the fuel filter/fuel injectors get dirty
C) Lack of spark - inspect your plugs & wires
Might want to try cleaning the throttle body. Every 30k miles they should be cleaned.
Best bet however is to take it to a reliable, licensed mechanic. Vehicles 1996 & newer can have diagnostic codes read by a computer hooked up to the vehicle, identifying the problem.
