Question about 2008 Dodge Caliber

Midas says my tie rod ends are shot on my 2008 dodge caliber with less than 40,000 mi, they want to charge me $800 for the fix to pass inspection does that sound fair?

Sounds high to me, being a former employee i can tell yu that they are paid comission on sales and labor, may be time to look elsewhere

    Id be willing to bet for 800 bucks, they(Midas) were replacing both lower control arms due to bad ball joints and rear control arm bushings along with both outer tie rod ends. ALL of those are unfortuanately common problems with the Calibers...there are complaints all over the net about this.

Need tie rod ends for right side, is it best to replace both, or just one that needs fixed?


Replace both, as it's recommended to get an alignment afterwards. You wouldn't want to go through that expense, then have the other tie rod fail down the road.

How to replace the tie rod end


Tie rod ends are replaceable, whether the steering system is rack and pinion or parallelogram steering system.

Tie rod ends are threaded to provide a means of adjusting toe. When a tie rod is replaced, measure the old tie rod assembly before disassembling it. An approximate toe-in adjustment can be made to the new one prior to installation. When removing the old tie rod end, count the number of turns it takes to remove it. Then, turn the new tie rod end onto its threads the same number of turns.
Some vehicles have tie rods that appear to be the same on both ends. The difference is in the threads. One end has left hand threads and the other has right hand threads. It is possible to install the entire shaft backwards (which will work). Mark the tie rod to identify the inner or ourter end before removing it.
Before tightening tie rod clamps, check to see that they are in good condition and are positioned properly so they can be clamped tightly. Before doing a front end adjustment, spray penetrating oil on the threads of the tie rods. Do this during the steering linkage inspection so the lubricant has time to soak in.

How do i loosen the outer tie rod end to remove it from the bushing once tie rod is out of streeing knuckle i know it will need to be aligined and i need to count treads when putting new outer tie rod end...


You may need a propane torch to heat up the nut on end of outer tie rod. With tie rod still attached to steering knuckle try to loosen the outer tie rod end nut that is connected to inner tie rod. Pull tie rod end back out of knuckle. Use pliers or vise grips to hold inner tie rod end while turning outer tie rod end to the left.

best advice is a garage with the right equipment ,ever see a splinter in a eye from hammering a bearing out ,not very nice ,even worse sitting in emergency for 3 hrs waiting to see a doctor

Tie rod replacement cost


Hi Gcg_77,
You will need to contact your local auto parts store to get price for the tie rod ends.My flat rate manual listed them at $65 a piece but this is an old price.
The labor time listed for these are as follows:

1 inner tie rod end is listed at 1.4 hours,if you replace both it is listed at 2.0 hours.
1 outer tie rod end is listed at 1.1 hours,if you replace both it is listed at 1.4 hours.
These times include resetting the toe only. If you want a complete alignment you deduct 0.4 hours labor and charge full alignment price.

loosen nut on tie rod..22mm wrench,remove nut from tie rod end..18mm socket,hit side of knuckle with hammer to seperate tie rod end..unscrew tie rod end from tie rod..reverse procedure to install..you will to hold down on tie rod end to keep stud from spinning

There is a tool that you can use that will make it easier for you. To get to the tie rod end, remove the wheel and take the outer tie rod end loose from the hub. You will have to use a hammer and hit the socket where the end goes into the hub to free it up. Once you have the tie rod loose from the hub, loosen the nut behind the outer tie rod end. Count the revolutions as you unscrew the outer end off and write te number down so you will know how far to put it back on. This will save your alignment. Now, the end that is still there is your inner tie rod end. You will have to undo the bellows boot to get to the nut. The tool will slide over the end and secure onto the nut. Now you just unscrew this and replace with you new inner tie rod end.
