Auto Recall Date: JAN 27, 2004

Vehicle Component: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH Estimated Vehicles Affected: 1415231 Model Affected1998 PONTIAC SUNFIRE

1998 Pontiac Sunfire Defect Summary:ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES. IF THE ENGINE FAILS TO START AND THE DRIVER HOLDS THE KEY IN THE "START" POSITION FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD, HIGH CURRENT FLOWS THROUGH THE IGNITION SWITCH, AND SOMETIMES PRODUCES ENOUGH HEAT TO MELT INTERNAL SWITCH PARTS.

Defect Consequence:IF THE SWITCH IS DAMAGED, A FIRE COULD OCCUR IN THE STEERING COLUMN, EVEN WITH THE ENGINE OFF AND THE KEY REMOVED. THE FIRE COULD SPREAD TO THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR, WHICH COULD INJURE OCCUPANTS OR CAUSE DAMAGE TO ADJOINING STRUCTURES.

Remedy:DEALERS WILL INSTALL A RELAY KIT IN THESE VEHICLES TO PREVENT HIGH CURRENT FROM FLOWING THROUGH THE IGNITION SWITCH, AND CHECK THAT YOUR CAR WILL START WITH A PROPERLY CHARGED BATTERY AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH. OWNER NOTIFICATION WILL BEGIN ON MARCH 1, 2004. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668, BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, OR OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537. CUSTOMERS CAN ALSO CHECK THEIR VEHICLE ONLINE BY GOING TO WWW.MYGMLINK.COM AND ENTERING THE VEHICLE'S IDENTIFICATION NUMBER.

I have a 1998 Pontiac Sunfire with the 2.2l and I cannot figure out how to wire the starter up. This is a picture of the starter in the car now, can anyone give me advice?

The larger terminal goes straight to the battery. It looks like it does have a battery cable on it though. The smaller terminal bolt appears to have no wire on it. This is the one that switches on the starter. It should go to a solenoid or electronic box. But there has to be a wire on it going to the ignition system.

98 pontiac sunfire turns over but wont stay runing

When was last healthy tune up? Plugs, wires, all fluids & filters??? Especially fuel filter? I'd start there and run a good fuel system cleaner through it.

98 sunfire wont start, battery good, replaced starter solnoid, starter, ignition.. please help

if you had the starter recall done, there is a relay mounted near the center of the radiator that controls start power. Pontiac dealer sells the part.

Starter Hitting Flywheel

It sounds alot like a faulty ignition switch rather than a starter. The starter should never kick before moving to the start position.

Does it crank at all? If it doesn't even crank it could be your starter.
