Question about 2004 Saturn VUE

Open Question

I have a 2004 Saturn Vue that is giving me the following DTC codes: p0700, p0701 and p1882. I know the 700 codes have to do with the Transmission control module and that the 1882 code is for a fault with the drive ratio but I wanted to know what these codes mean and how to test for the actual problem.

Disconnect your battery. touch the neg. and positive cables together for a second. let it sit for at least an hour. that should reset everything. as far as reading codes you would need a scanner. on OBD-1 cars you could use a paper clip and flash the codes. but on OBD-II you need a scanner

SOURCE: how do i test a ignition module on 2003 saturn vue

First thing is to check for codes which would indicate if you have an ignition module issue, a crank sensor issue or possible a PCM issue. If you do not check for codes first you will create new ones and then determining the problem will be alot more difficult.

P0700 Transmission Control System Malfunction OBD-II Trouble Code Technical Description Article by Dale Toalston ASE Certified Technician Transmission Control System TCS Malfunction What does that mean? Many vehicles have a control module for the automatic transmission called a transmission control module (TCM). The engine control module (ECM) communicates with the TCM to monitor the automatic transmission for faults. If the TCM detects a fault in the automatic transmission and sets a transmission related fault code, the ECM is informed of this also and sets a P0700 in the ECM memory. This illuminates the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) to let the driver know there is a problem. If this code is present and the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) is illuminated that basically means there is at least one transmission code set in the TCM's memory. P0700 is an informational code only. It doesn't point to a direct fault in the engine, only a general fault in the transmission. More diagnosis is necessary to identify what the transmission fault is. This requires a scan tool that will communicate with the transmission module. Symptoms Symptoms of a P0700 DTC may include: Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illumination The transmission may exhibit drivability problems like slipping, etc. Causes More often then not, the cause of this code is that there is a transmission problem of some kind. The TCM detected the problem and set a code. P0700 means that a fault code is stored in the TCM. However this doesn't rule out the possibility of a failed PCM or TCM (unlikely). Possible Solutions For a P0700 the only real solution is to acquire a scan tool that will communicate with the transmission control module. Extracting this code from the TCM will be the first step in repairing the fault in the transmission. If the TCM compatible scan tool will not communicate with the Transmission Control Module then that is a good indication that there may be a fault with the TCM itself. Check your transmission output shaft speed sensor. First check that the connector is clean, free of corrosion, secured firmly and that wires have good insulation. If all looks well at this point then disconnect the speed sensor, remove it and clean its tip of any debris and see if this clears the DTC. If not change the sensor for a new one (less than $30). This should fix it.

How do I repair a problem with the code p0742?

Hey marcarhernan

This code is set when there is a variance in speed from the transmission input and output shafts. It can be a simple sensor issue or a more complex internal problem. There are several recalls for VUE transmissions but I do not think yours falls under this problem. Yours sounds more like an internal belt issue which Saturn has a technical bulletin for as shown below. This usually requires replacement of the case cover and filter and sometimes the belt depending on the damage. This is the bulletin that has to do with your code;

Bulletin No.: 04-07-30-024E
Date: June 09, 2006
TECHNICAL
Subject:
No Movement in Drive or Reverse with or without DTC P0741, P0742, P0841, P1756, P1758, or P1882 (Replace Case Cover Assembly and Filter) Models:
2002 Saturn VUE - Retrofitted with a 2003 or 2004 VT25E (VTi) transaxle (RPO M16/M75)
2003-2004 Saturn ION
2003-2005 Saturn VUE
with VT25E (VTi) transaxle (RPO M16/M75)
Supercede:
This bulletin is being revised to add additional Correction information. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 04-07-30-024D (Section 07 - Transmission/Transaxle).
Condition
Some customers may comment on the vehicle not moving in the "D" (Drive) or "R" (Reverse) gear selection positions. In many cases, the transaxle will also produce an audible grind or whine noise when attempting to operate in drive or reverse. The Service Engine Soon (SES) telltale may be illuminated with DTCs P0741, P0742, P0841, P1756, P1758, or P1882 set.
Cause
This condition may occur when the VT25E transaxle belt has malfunctioned.
