Question about 2006 Chevrolet HHR

2 Answers

I have a 2006 chevrolet hhr, the steering column was replaced a year ago and is now out of warranty. My issue is when I go to turn the car off and try to remove my key it will not come out. It only turns halfway. I have to restart the car and play with the steering to get it to let me remove the key

This is a VERY common problem. The ultimate answer is to have the ignition switch replaced. In the meantime, you'll need to be able to get that key out. On the bottom side of the steering column there is a one inch square rubber plug that you pry out. You can then use your pointer finger to push the switch in. This will release the lock and let you turn your key to the off position and remove. You may wan to leave this plug out as you'll be doing this a lot until it is repaired.

Sounds like a bad connection at the battery terminals, or a low battery.

Where do i add power steering fluid in a chevy hhr

They DO NOT have a power steering pump. This type of vehicle has an electric motor under the steering column that controls steering.

My 2007 hhr power steering light has came on and the power steering has stopped working

There is a known issue with the power steering motor for some of the HHRs. When you turn the car off and back on it will probably reset, for a few minutes, days, even weeks... However, if it continues to fail, the motor, which is on the steering column under the dash, will need to be replaced. You can do it, but you may want to contact the dealer first for warranty coverage.

Power steering keeps going out and I turn car off and then restart it and it works for a few

This is a known issue that will probably require the replacement of the power steering motor. The HHR uses an electric DC motor to provide the power steering force.

GM is recalling Cobalts and other similar vehicles, but not yet HHRs, to replace the motors, but you will personally be responsible for cost if you are now out of warranty.

I would recommend you contact your dealer to discuss options unless you are able to replace the motor yourself.

Loosing power steering

The HHR is using an electric assist steering. You may need a new column. The column has the assist motor built in. I hope this helps.
Thank You,

Steering will won't turn

HHR's do not have a belt or pump for steering. It is electric. Replace the 60 amp fuse under the hood and you should be good to go. I had the same problem 6 months ago. PDV

Where do you add power steering fluid?

The HHR does not use power steering fluid. The power steering is strictly an electric motor attached to the steering column under the dash. If you are having problems, you may need to have the motor replaced.

However, before you do, check the following fuses:

Underhood fuse #1 - 60A
Inside console fuse #19 - 2A

Either with kill the steering and may have been blown if you (or an uninformed mechanic) have jumped the car incorrectly.
