i believe what it does is switch to 4 wheel drive to 3 wheel drive and visa versa.

Have you tried going in reverse and disengaging 4 wheel drive?

For 4W Lo stop and move the selector from 2W Hi to 4W Hi then push down on the selector and move through N into 4W Lo.

that sounds like a bad universal joint on the transfer case to the front axle. have that checked out
