Thats a major operation as everything will have to come off the front of the engine. I had the timing cover crank seal replaced in mine as most of them leak and people think its the cover leaking.

2006 nissan frontier low oil pressure at idle after timing chain replacement

I have just spent $1500.00 to fix this low oil pressure problem. The main cost was having the timing chain replaced and where the oil pressure problem was found. The low oil pressure problem is caused by a bad gasket that is under a plate inside the timing chain cover. The dealer wanted to replace the whole housing as Nissan dose not offer a new gasket and wants you to replace the inner timing chain housing. The plate covers part of the oil gallery, the gasket breaks out from this plate and that is where the oil pressure goes. The gasket can be replaced by removing the plate and making a new gasket. Note getting to the plate inside the timing cover is a major labor issue that takes about 12 hours to complete start to finish. I had to fabricate the gasket my self as the dealer would not. Cost for fixing the bad gasket was about $17.00 for materials. Replacing the timing chain was at my request as it was making noise.

I have been advsed that I have a broken timing belt or "jumped timing chain.Besides the belt/chain, what other components do you recommend replacing(Gasket/seal,cam and crank pulleys, tensioners)?

I am assuming you have the 2.2L 4 cylinder engine. The timing chain tensioner on these engines is nororious for failure resulting in jumped timing. Be advised that depending upon the situation, you may have sustained major engine damage. If the timing simply jumped when turning the engine off, you may be safe, but if it occurred at highway speed, there is a high probability that there is valve damage in the engine that will need repair before you can move on to the timing chain and tensioner. As far as "other components", if your know that the head is ok, then you should replace the timing gears, chain, and tensioner. Also purchase a "timing gasket set" which will give you the gaskets ans seals you need to do the job.

    • Crankshaft pulley and hub
    • Drive belt tensioner gm_truck_s10_tcbolts.gif

    • Timing chain cover bolts gm_truck_s10_tc.gif

    • Timing chain cover and gasket
  2. Install a bolt in the end of the crankshaft CAUTION
Do not install the crankshaft balancer bolt or a bolt longer than 1 inch or damage to the crankshaft threaded hole will result.
  3. Rotate crankshaft until the number 1 piston is at Top Dead Center of compression stroke.
  4. Make sure that the alignment marks are aligned with the tabs on the timing chain tensioner. gm-03-22-611.gif

  5. Measure distance between hole in bracket and unworn surface of timing chain tensioner shoe. NOTE: If distance between the hole and unworn surface of timing chain tensioner is greater than 0.314 in (8 mm), replace tensioner, timing chain and sprockets.
  6. Remove timing chain tensioner bolts.
  7. Remove the timing chain, timing chain tensioner and camshaft sprocket at the same time.
  8. Remove the crankshaft sprocket using special tool J 22888-20A or equivalent.

NOTE: If any camshaft components are being replaced to correct a noise problem, all camshaft drive components must be replaced.
To Install:
  1. Install the crankshaft sprocket alignment key.
  2. Install the crankshaft sprocket using special tool J 5590 or equivalent. gm-03-22-613.gif

  3. Compress the timing chain tensioner spring and insert a pin into the tensioner hole to retain the tensioner shoe.
  4. Install timing chain and timing chain tensioner (do not tighten tension bolts).
  5. Align the crankshaft and camshaft timing marks with the tab on the timing chain tensioner.
  6. Tighten the timing chain tensioner bolts.
    • Torque to: 18 ft lbs (24 Nm)
  7. Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt.
    • Torque to: 96 ft lbs (130 Nm)
  8. Remove pin from timing chain tensioner hole.
  9. Remove bolt from end of crankshaft. CAUTION
Inspect the timing chain cover for warping or damage. Replace if needed.
  10. Clean all timing chain cover mating surfaces.
  11. Install or connect the following:
    • Timing chain cover to the engine block
      1. Ensure that the gasket is installed properly in the groove in the timing chain cover
    • Timing chain cover and make sure it fully seated on the alignment dowel pins
    • Timing chain cover bolts
      1. Torque to: 97 inch lbs (11 Nm)
    • Drive belt tensioner
    • Crankshaft damper hub and the crankshaft pulley

Chain broke

If the engine is running ok, leave it be. If you plan on keeping the vehicle for a long time and no ther issues exist with the performance, you may want to replace the chain, but you'll have to replace other parts as well. Cam shaft gear, crankshaft gear and chain should be replaced at the same time, gaskets, front seal, oil pan gaskets to name a few. Its a big job. I don't know the history of your engine, but I'm sure other parts will need replacing before the chain. Just a thought.

I have a 1987 Dodge Ram 50 sport 2.6 litre the head gasket is blown how do i get the timing chain off to replace the gasket

You have to remove the oil pan - harmonic balancer - timing cover to replace timing chain... to replace cylinder head gasket and not the chain -- you need an assistant to hold the camshaft gear with chain on it. Suspending it with wire to keep the chain from moving the timing (do not let the chain relax as it will come off the crankshaft gear and change the timing)
