Question about 1991 Buick LeSabre

2 Answers

My 1991 Buick LeSabre dies randomly while driving, usually right after the car idles hard at a stop, at slow speed. Then, it will start back up after it sits for a while. I think it might be fuel related. Fuel filter/fuel injectors maybe? It also is a little weak/shaky going uphill, but more when turning to the right--weird.

Your fuel to air ratio is out of range and you will need to look for a vacuum leak such as a hole in a rubber hose between the PCV valve and the motor (greasy or squishy rubber indicates a hole) and check for unmetered air entering the motor between the air filter box and the throttle body - any leak in these two airways will cause racing at idle, loss of power, cutting out and stalling. If you hear muffled backfires, replace the plug wires and inspect the plugs and compare them to photos of acceptable plug ends on the Internet.

1993 LeSabre- just started running rough mostly when put in reverse or drive. Not so much in park or neutral but a little, maybe cause of higher idle speed in park. Also runs a bit rough at slow speeds....

Sounds like the Torque Converter Lock-up Solenoid is failing. It will cause the car to run rough at slow speeds, and sometimes stall while idling in gear (at a stop sign for example)
To test this, locate the 2 or 3 wire connector on the left side of the transmission (looking at it from the left side of the car, it can be hard to find some times) Disconnect it. If the car runs and drives ok with it unplugged, the Lock Up Solenoid has gone bad. The solenoid itself is inside the valve body, inside the transmission (above the transmission pan)

Check the fuel filter on car for a restriction. Check the air filter for a restriction(dirty). also check the IAC valve (idle/air/control) located on the side of the throttle body. To check the iac valve, start the engine and disconnect the electrical plug from the iac. Listen for a change in the idle of the engine. then reconnect the plug to the iac valve and turn on the a/c and listen for the engine idle speed to change. If not then replace the iac valve. Hope this will help you.

One suggestion:
Speed sensor failure.

Info:
Some of the classic symptoms, stalling at dead stops. failure to auto lock doors. poor fuel economy. Failure to go to overdrive.

Recommendation:
Go to your local parts store and run the failure codes.

Shop notes:
Your ECU thinks that the engine is running with out moving, During slow down the engine steps down the idle to match ground speed and as a result the engine will not stall. At present it goes directly to idle and stalls due to drag on motor.
Hope this tip helps.

Erratic idle speed

Have the fuel pressure checked. Could be an erratic pump or pressure regulator.
