Question about Chevrolet Malibu

1 Answer

Almost every time I stop somewhere to run my daily errands, my 2002 chevy mailbu won't start. The anti-theft light remains on for about ten minutes or so, then only after it turns off I can start my car. I've read online that chevy does not want to recall the obviously faulty parts because it is not cost effective. I apparently am not alone in this fight, and from what i have read online in various forums this can also cause my car to randomly shut off as I'm driving. In hoping to prevent any sort of injury or accident, I need help. I cannot afford a new car or the necessary parts, so my solutions are limited. Please help. Thank you.

You can put key in and leave it on do not start car wait 10 to 20 min.s and then start your car this should reset the computor. if not you may have to take it to the shop or have to redo this when it happens.

I have a 2003 chevy malibu that won;t start. When you turn the key to on the Theft System light comes on steady ( no flashing). I t used o go into this mode periodically where the Theft System light...

I have had the same problem. This has happened to me three times in the past nine months or so. Per the owner's manual, you turn the key to the on position and wait about ten minutes. This resets the system and when the "Theft System" light goes out, it starts right up. I did this each time and it started right up.

Replaced ignition switch in 1999 chevy cavaliar rs, anti-theft light comes on and stays on and won't allow car to start and remain on or run

You have to do a relearn procedure on the anti-theft system:

Attempt to start the vehicle. Leave the ignition on until the THEFT SYSTEM indicator turns off (about 10 minutes). Turn the ignition switch off. Leave the ignition switch off with key in for about 10 minutes. Attempt to start vehicle.

2002 Saturn SL2 was working fine an hour previous to the 'lock out'. I went to run another errand and it wouldn't start. Battery good, all lights, etc coming on. Wouldn't turn over. Anti-theft feature...

Your owners manual will tell you that the anti-theft can be turned off, but doesn't tell you how (dealer only?). If it is turning over but wont start, (trying to hit and outside temp is below 32) check the coolant temp sensor. Saturns notorious for cracked sensor sending false info to computer thus flooding engine.

the shop that told you they ripped it out only ripped you off unless they removed some aftermarket alarm system i,m a gm mechanic and if you remove the factory anti-theft on a 2003 olds alero it will not run ever again until re-installed make sure your battery is charged good turn igntion switch to run position but do not try to start security light should be flashing let car sit with switch on and light flashing for ten minutes light should stop flashing now start your car this is how to reset anti-theft was that worth $400.00 and again why let a bussiness named brakemax look at a no start condition keep on and you will be BROKE to the max HOPE THIS HELPS AND STAY AWAY FROM THEM YOUR FRIEND @ HELPMAX

Dont know how to reset or bypass gm theft system car is not starting .It tries and quits.

this is one way to reset it :
first make sure the battery is fully charged , then do the following:
key in the ignition but do not crank the motor, just leave it at the
ignition mode for ten minutes ,then turn it off POSITION for 5 seconds then REPEAT again 2 more times. at the 3 rd time youre gonna notice the ANTI THEFT light on dash to blink. when doing the last step , remove key , inserted again and turn on motor , good luck , AJ

02 malibu won't start

If car won;t start, but turns over it may be the anti theft system. Follow the directions in the manual-turn the key on and leave it for ten minutes or until the anti theft light goes out. Turn the ignition OFF and then restart the engine. If you continue to have problems with the anti theft system, disconnect the battery for 4 or 5 minutes and then reconnect. It seems to reset the system. Found this out after a mech. had worked on the system, disconnected the battery and told me it would be 400 to 500 to replace the module. Said no thanks and drove off to never have the problem again (so far!) 10,000 mile since.
