Question about Chrysler Sebring

1 Answer

Where is the throttle plate located as I hear it needs to be cleaned else it will cause problems. The engine currently will not idle unless the throttle is advanced some after the battery was replaced. I understand the computer has adapted to a dirty throttle plate but now has to either relearn the position or I have to clean the throttle plate. Having not worked on engines for decades I have no idea what I'm looking for. Thanks, Mark

The throttle plate is where the accelerator cable hooks to,but the throttle plate is actually on the inside of the throttle body, remove the intake hose,or duct and you can see the throttle plate,it will open when the throttle is moved,it is a plate that tilts as you accelerate .

Where is the idle screw located on a 1999 Saturn need to adjust the idle..Still trying to find out why car will not stay running

There is no screw to adjust the idle , the PCM - engine computer controls the idle with the use of IAC valve , Idle air control valve ! The Base idle is set at the factory an you need not try to adjust it ! You will cause running problem an the check engine light to come on . Try cleaning the throttle plate and the idle air control passages .

Engine revs up and down when reaching operating temperature, replaced all sensors sonata 2.5 v6 1999

Check coolant level to make sure it is full. Low coolant can cause surging idle. Also, check throttle plate for dirty/coking causing minimum idle to be affected. If throttle plate is dirty, clean with carb cleaner and retest

Correct code P0504?

What Colorado do you have ? 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive ? Sport ,sport LS 3.5L , Z71, Z71 LS. etc. what size engine ? an does it have electronic throttle control ? I have factory service info an it is not showing that code .
DTC P0506

Circuit Description

The throttle actuator control (TAC) motor is controlled by the powertrain control module (PCM). The DC motor located in the throttle body drives the throttle plate. In order to decrease idle speed, the PCM commands the throttle closed reducing air flow into the engine and the idle speed decreases. In order to increase idle speed, the PCM commands the throttle plate open allowing more air to pass the throttle plate. If the actual idle RPM does not match the desired idle RPM within a calibrated time, this DTC sets.

Why does my 1998 gmc jimmy rpm drop so low when its warm causing a miss in the engine

The truck ECM computer controls the idle speed based on a number of engine parameters. Idle drops to a minimum preset level when engine coolant reaches normal operating range and the engine goes into closed loop control. This idle is typically set at around 575 rpm, and cannot be changed without reprogramming the ECM. The miss is not caused by the idle speed - unless the engine is tuned properly and has not lost compression, this idle speed can result in a rough running engine at idle (typical with older 4.3L Vortec engines). Best bet is to get a complete tuneup which will include checking the O2 sensors, catalytic converter and cleaning the IAC valve and throttle body.

Motor dies unless you keep your foot on the gas, but not all of the time. sometimes hard to start.

Sounds like an idle problem. The solution should cost you nothing. Remove the air trunking between the air cleaner and the throttle body. Have a clean cloth and some WD40 spray ready. Clean the throttle interior and the outside of the throttle plate. Apply pressure with your finger tips to the throttle plate to rotate it and continue cleaning the throttle area behind the plate and is possible the back of the throttle plate itself. Pay special attention to the edges of the throttle plate. Mounted onot the the throttle body exterior you will find the idle air control valve. This is an electrically operated device that permits measured amount of air past the throttle plate when the engine is at idle to ensure that the engine does not stall. These idle controllers can take two forms a) a simple valve on a passageway around the throttle plate or b) a geared motor that opens the throttle plate a tiny amount. Which ever system is used everything should be spotlessly clean. The IAC valve body can be removed to aid in the cleaning process. Take care not to rip any gaskets etc as you can use them again during reassembly. With everything cleaned up it should be much better. Put everything back together. If problem persists check all vacuum pipes making connection with the inlet manifold for leaks; spraying suspect areas with WD40 will result in a small jump in revs if you hit on a vacuum leak. Also check that your EGR valve is functioning properly and is closing at idle.

My 96 nissan sentra shuts down at times in idle at stop light, allready installed new plugs roter and plug wires

Disconnect the air ducting between the air filter box and the throttle. Clean your throttle body interior with a cloth and plenty of carb choke spray (WD40 is good too). Idling is controlled by the engine's computer and the Idle Air Control Valve IACV . This device allows air passed the closed throttle plate when the engine is at idle. Locate the inlet port in front of the throttle plate in the inside wall of the throttle body. Locate the IACV on the outside of the throttle and remove it. Give it and associated passageways a really good clean. Make sure the valve and valve seat are free of crud. Re-assemble and this should cure the problem

1995 ford taruis starts but stalls when cold. runs fine when warmed up. How do I fix cold idle?

Often times the throttle plate becomes coked with carbon deposits, causing the plate to not return to its expected position. Remove the air tube at the throttle body & clean the plate very well with toothbrush and carb cleaner. Disconnect battery terminals for 30 seconds to reset computer & it will relearn idle strategy after about 5 minuets of driving.

2002 camry le 4 cyl idles really really low, sputters, and turns off, i have to put it in park and keep reving it and when the light turns green quickly put it in drive and go or it will turn off. also,...

This vehicle is equipped with an electronic throttle control motot that operates the throttle plate. and controls the idle if your throttle plate is carboned up if will decrease air flow into the engine causing a low idle. This is very common if your battery was replaced or disconnected.

When staring my 99 Ranger the engine runs at an increased RPM for a few seconds before idling down to the correct RPMs. It seems to be last for a longer period of time the warmer the engine is

Hello... The first thing to determine is whether the high idle is caused by a mechanical issue, such as a faulty idle air control sensor (IAC), or a throttle plate that is not closing, or if the idle speed is actually being commanded high by the computer. One of the easiest ways to do that is to simply unplug the IAC with the truck at idle, and allow the engine to slow to the "minimum air rate" or base idle speed. There is no published spec, but if your minimum idle speed is in the 500-600rpm range in park, thats close enough. There is no normal service adjustments required, but if something is keeping the throttle plate from closing, then you'll have to correct that.
Now...when you unplug the IAC, you will find either a normal minimum idle, or no change at all. If there is no change, and the throttle is not sticking open, suspect air is getting around the throttle plate, which could be a bad IAC, because thats exactly what it does, it allows air to enter the engine around the throttle plate. Normally the computer has complete control of the IAC, but it can fail mechanically, so it must be checked.
The next scenerio would be the idle speed being correct when the IAC is unplugged, and then going back up when it's plugged back in. This would indicate the computer is actually commanding the idle speed high....and this is where the correct scan tool becomes so important, because it allows the techincian to see this information right from the computer. From this info the problem can be determined and repaired.
Good luck..i hope this helps...please take time to rate me a fixya.

The throttle sticks during the warmer months

The throttle body is located on the driver side of the engine compartment.
If throttle plate has not been clean you might want to get a can of carburetor cleaner, remove the inlet snorkel hose and clean around and behind the throttle plate.
The IAC (idle air control) motor may need to be cleaned. The IAC controls your idle rpm.
Good luck, let me know.
