Question about 1996 Toyota Corolla

Car will not start, i put in new plugs and they are sparking, there doesnt seem to be any gas in the combustion chamber as the plugs are dry?

B&s 22hp engine won't start


Hi Charles:
I'd start by checking the spark plug condition and function.
Wet........... no spark
Dry............ no fuel
Check for spark anyway. Hot and blue.
Try priming carb with a squirt of gas.
Drain and flush carb. You may need to remove and thoroughly clean if gummed up.

Starter works trys tostart but wont


if it tries to start, i.e. it is catching check the level of fuel into the combustion chamber and the power of the spark.
If you crank over several times on a fully charged battery, remove one of the spark pluvs if it is a petrol/gas engine, and check the spark plug tip, it should be moist with gas/petrol or at the very least, smell stronly of it.
cHECK THE PLUGS ARE CLEAN, UNDAMAGED AND CORRECTLY ADJUSTED.
If you attach a plug lead to a plug and lean it on the engine and crank the starter over you should see a healthy blue spark between the electrodes.
If the fuel is there and the spark is there at the same time the engine should start, (assuming there is no makor internal problem.)

The issue might be the timing, getting the spark and the fuel to coincide in the combustion chamber when the piston is at the optimum position in the bore.


If there is a weak spark or too little fuel these should be investigated work away from the combustion chambers to the source of the fuel and electricity.
If the spark and fuel are healthy and the timing is okay check compression in the cylinders.
They should be healthy and withing a couple or five pounds of each other

It might be sensors playing up and affecting the ECU, (engine management system)


There is a lot to check, A GOOD MECHANIC SHOULD BE INVALUABLE TO DIAGNOSE.

I have a 97 Ford truck will not start but fuel pump is working


Engines only need three things to run provided they are in running order. Another words of the timing is correct and the combustion is correct. Gas, air, spark. If you are sure you have gas in the carb or throttle body then I would check power at your coil. If that's alright then pull a spark plug wire and put a screwdriver in the plug wire and with the other end of the team screwdriver near a groung try to start the 's. Here should be a spark

Have you confirmed that you are getting fuel into the combustion chamber. If this is a carburetor model, the needle might be stuck against the seat in the float chamber, especially if the new motor has been standing for sum time.

Blew a headgasket,,, had all new gaskets put on car,,, when all back together, it won't hold antifreeze but car does not overheat,, runs to a point and then blows the antifreeze out,,, i'm thinking they...


Sounds like a good diagnosis. You can remove the spark plugs and see if there is coolant in the combustion chambers. A compression check would also narrow things down. The coolant reservoir would have a smell of gas or oil. I hope there is no water in the oil. Regards, Don

My 2003 accent won't start on cold weather. I pressed the gas pedal and smells gas, so it is not a gas problem. But when it start it runs smoothly. What seems to be the problem?


when was the last time you changed the plugs? if its been a little too long the plug gap will become too big of a gap and harder for the spark to jump but once the motor is running it will more compession and also the heat of the combustion chamber to help and will run smooth...checking the plugs will be a good start

Continuing to crank the engine, without touching the accelerator pedal should "unflood" the engine. Remember that what floods is the combustion chamber, where the spark plugs are, not the carb itself. If the flooding was really severe, maybe the plugs are unable to make sparks. Take out the plugs, leave them out for an hour (to allow gasoline to evaporate out of the cylinder chambers) and put fresh plugs in. Good luck.

1- Check if you see spark at spark plugs when start. If if is not then look for problem at ignition system.

2- Check the cold start valve, it is supposed to open only less than 8 sec during the start to assist the combustion. If it is faulty then it becomes always open causing too much gas in the cylinder chamber. Remember the golden ratio of Air: Gas is 14.6 to have a good combustion.
3-Check injectors. These injectors are normal close and only open when there is a signal from injection module control.

Check your spark plugs to make sure they are dry. If they're wet they'll extinguish the spark before it can make contact with the fuel, thus preventing starting. If your plugs are really wet, leave them out of the cylinder heads and use compressed air to dry the combustion chamber and plugs. If compressed air is not available, leave them open to air dry. Once everything is dry, reconnect your spark plugs and try to start again.
