Question about 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan

1 Answer

In the last few days I have noticed that my thermostat goes from C to H in no time when driving and the little sailboat light comes on( like it needs water or something). I assume the car is overheating, is this correct? Fi so are there any cheap fixes?

I,ve worked on alot of these with the same problem and they were low on coolant due to a small waterpump leak that never hit the ground, check the level first, if not low then replace the thermostant.

under the bonnet on the radiator is an automatic fan, now if the radiator is low or you need to replace the coolant in it or top it up but the car may need a service and let them know the problem.

Hello Sir, I have replaced the radiator, radiator heat sensor, radiator cap, and all hoses. There are no leaks coming from the engine. I have also replaced the anti-freeze with BMW manufactured...

After the car is cool and has been sitting for a while, remove the radiator cap, have someone start the car, the coolant in the radiator should drop a little, and there should be movement, if there is no movement, let the car run for a while, with some systems it won't cycle enough to notice until the engine warms up. If there is still no movement, you likely have a bad water pump and/or thermostat.
Another method as a "just to be sure", drain the coolant overflow tank, and fill it with clean distilled water. Drive the car for a few days (carefully not to overheat it obviously, if the engine is getting too hot to drive normally don't do this test). If after a few days of driving the fluid in the overflow tank is still clear (water), then there is no circulation in the system.
It's usually best to start by replacing the thermostat, and then re-check. If that doesn't fix the problem it is most likely a water pump, or in very rare cases a plugged radiator or coolant passage.

Check engine light came on this morning, mazda 3 09', it has 14,500 miles, i just got an oil change at the dealership a few days ago, also i think the gas cap was a little bit loose i noticed the last time...

I would take it back to the dealer and tell them the check engine light came on not long after oil change. Have them run the code on their dime...it's a reasonable request!

A loose gas cap will defintely trigger the engine light, but in most cases, it will reset itself within one week. Some cars don't have a reset which forces you to have a mechanic reset it for you.
