1987 Nissan Maximum gas hand doesn't work & transmission is reading full but it leaks sometimes

There are three fixes possible for the gas gauge....but I would have this troubleshot by a garage:

1. The gas gauge itself does not work anymore. It could have just finally "died". Problem is, you cannot replace just the gauge. It has to be the whole instrument cluster. Having a garage shoot power TO the gauge and then shot the gauge itself will let you know if the gauge assembly is bad.

2. The fuel sending unit is bad. This means the wiring to the gas tank fuel pump/sending unit is bad and does not work. The signal is not being sent to the fuel/gas gauge. This means the fuel pump assembly needs replacing.

3. There is a wire problem somewhere between the gas tank and the dash to the fuel gauge.

The transmission leaking but still reading full just means that there is plenty of transmission fluid in the transmission. The drips or spots you are finding are not enough to "read" low enough. Unless you have a HUGE spot of tranny fluid left on the ground, I would just think about a transmission fluid filter change. This way, a new pan gasket will be installed and fresh fluid filled to the proper level will be accomplished on your car.

1987 Dodge Dakota 3.9 engine, Holley 2 barrel. Having running issues. Bought the truck cheap cause it wouldn't run. Cleaned the carburetor and installed a rebuild kit. Starts right up and idles great....

Yes, the floats may be causing the fuel level in the carb. to be too high. The black plugs indicate running too rich. Clean the plugs and check the fuel level.

Fuel gauge reads correctly then goes to empty

9 times out of 10 the fuel pump/level sender assembly is the cause. Sometimes the gauge pod is faulty, and there have been cases where there were either poor connector pin fit issues and/or chaffed/melted/cut wires in the harness that leads back to the fuel pump. It is an extremely common fault and would be surprised if the pump/level sender assembly wasn't the cause.

I hope this info helps!

P0463 Fuel Level Sensor Circuit High Input Any ideas on the problem and possible solutions?

P0463 - Fuel Level Sensor Circuit High Input
An excessively high voltage is sent from the sensor is sent to ECM.

The fuel level sensor is mounted in the fuel level sensor unit. The sensor detects a fuel level in the fuel tank and transmits a signal to the ECM or PCM.

It consists of two parts, one is mechanical float and the other side is variable resistor. Fuel level sensor output voltage changes depending on the movement of the fuel mechanical float.

Symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

Possible causes
- Fuel level sersor circuit harness or connectors is open or shorted
- Fuel level sensor may be faulty

Possible solution
Replaced fuel level sensor.

Hope helps (remember to rate this answer).

My gas gage is jumping..I was told by an expert that i had to drop the tank to get to theFUEL PUMP/SENSOR ASSEMBLY.Do i need to buy a FUEL SENDING UNIT ?? Or should i look at the FUEL LEVEL FLOATS ??

If you can get the sending unit seperatly you could just replace it, however, I would recommend just replacing the whole assembly since your dropping the tank. Nothing worse than dropping your fuel tank for that only to have a fuel pump go out a short time later and having to do it all over again. While your there you might as well replace both then you shouldn't have to go back into your fuel tank for quite awhile. Gl

FUEL GAUGE DOES NOT WORK BUT OTHER GAUGES DO?

Hi, you can restore the functions of your fuel gauge by replacing the sending unit that i located inside the fuel tank. this unit is part of the fuel pump assembly and, it registers the fuel level, via floating device that is attached to the pump assembly. replacing this sending unit will fix this issue.

Please rate and have great day:)
