That's the dummy light for the radiator or cooling system. If it comes on during normal running operation, it's indicating that the coolant is low or hot, and likely overheated already.

My 1985 turbo seems to consume more gas than normal.

There are a number of things that can cause this: needs oil change, old and worn plugs and wires, and your fuel filter could be clogging are some the most likely problems.
