Transmission I have a 96 jetta 2.0 manual. My transmission is whining badly, and second gear only kicks in about half the time.I have replaced my linkage so that can't be it as far as second gear.Where in the hell is the plug on the tranny to put gear oil in?My car manual is not specific at all. I know for sure its not the little timing plug on the front.

The automatic trans. uses ATF trans. fluid . The manual uses gear oil. The spout to check the oil is located on the side of the trans. right behind the radiator.

1st and 2nd gear won't catch in my manual 96

it is very likely this is being cuased by worn shift linkage and not the transmission itself, check the shift rods and bushings for being excessively loose, also any trans repair shop will do a test drive and give you a free diagnosis in hope of getting the work, things are tight right now. please rate this.

My manual reverse gear on my '96 VW Jetta spits out the reverse and makes a grinding sound?

You have bad sycronizers in the gearbox. They are made of softer metal so they will wear out. They are used to smoothly shifte from one gear to another. How does the clutch feel? Any play in the shifter? Could be the clutch going bad, or play in the shifter also.

Where is my transmission oil located on my 2003 jetta vw 1.8t

My 2002 Jetta TDI had similar symptoms and research revealed that that model transmission (01M) is plainly and simply, a heap of **** . If you want to be done with it, you can have a used manual installed for about half what replacement with another POS would cost. If you are mechanically inclined, you can follow the procedure outlined on www.tdiclub.com to do it yourself, or if you are lucky, there is a "Guru" near you who can do it for you. (I wouldn't let a dealer touch it though!) I did the swap myself just about a month ago, and I LOVE driving my car again. No comparison between that old slush box and a manual with TDI torque.

1998 volkswagon jetta manual transmission is hard to shift

Transmission problem...

I'd check the fluid levels... on most if not all 98's there is no tranny fluid stick so you have to either look for the plug on the transmission. Most cars have 2. One on the bottom and one half way up from the bottom of the transmission driver's side. Top it off until the tranny fluid runs out of the hole.

If this doesnt help... you need to get it checked.

!997 Jetta manual transmission won't shift into gears.

This sounds like it could be a few things. Check the transmission/engine mounts. The linkage could also be a problem by being worn or by the mounts being bad. Could be a bad pressure plate/clutch. These transmissions usually give you some warning first by making noise. Expecially in reverse if they are on there way out. Does it go into any gear now?

1st, 3rd and 5th Gears all pop out of place + Whining noise

hi my name is nathan .......now...... what it sounds like is #1 (I have to hold it in place til I get to second gear) that can be that your shift linkage is worn or out of adjustment, pilot bushing is Badly worn, shift fork, lever and or shaft is bent or worn,or your bell housing is misaligned or just loose...i have a few more ideas on why it is jumping out but those are the main ones now about your whining gear noise#2( The whining sound starts low pitched in each gear then gets higher pitched as the rev's increase) you may have worn gears maybe or it could be just that your transmission lubricant is incorrect or inadequate.
