Question about 2000 Honda Accord

1 Answer

1990 Honda Accord Temp Gauge goes up to the extremely hot (to the end of the hot) mark on the gauge all of a sudden and then drops back down to the Normal mark after about 15 seconds. I drove the car several miles on the highway and it did not repeat this type of action. Several days later, it did the same thing a the spur moment and dropped back to normal after a few seconds. What does this mean? The fan comes on sometimes after the car was parked, which is normal for a older car such as the Honda. Let me know your thoughts.

Fan coming on after shutdown is okay, and needed. Check for full coolant, and bleeding of any air in the system. Be sure that the heater is on FULL hot during filling.
Then pressure test the cooling system and fix any leaks. Your issue sure sounds like sticking thermostat or low coolant.

Temp gauge goes up to hot then back down only a few times

This is a sign that the thermostat is sticking shut and then opening after the temp gets past a certain point. If the heat gauge goes to high and then drops down suddenly, this is the likely culprit and you need to replace the thermostat - again.

I have had them arrive from the parts store and be defective.

1990 honda accord temp gauge above hot limit.

Hi there,

Firstly - DO NOT run engine, when guage reads hot, as this will cause costly damage to head gasket & alloy engine head.

The fact that guage takes 1min to read HOT, would confirm the guage IS working properly.

So, other components which are likely to cause hot readings (in this order) are:

- lack of coolant (or leakage somewhere): is there sufficient green coolant at the correct level? Top up mixture to correct level. Repair any leaks.

- collapsed radiator hose: when engine is cold, start engine, then quickly watch both upper & lower radiator hoses to see if either begins to flex inwards (collapse). Replace if either hose is collapsed.

- bad/incorrect thermostat rating : when replacing thermostats, you must ensure it is of the SAME temp rating (they all differ).

- Incorrect Temp sensor rating: the ratings of this sensor must be within manufacturer's spec's.

- bad waterpump: the engine relies on the waterpump to distribute the coolant throughout the entire system. If waterpump is faulty, coolant will not flow quick enough, causing overheating.

If you still believe all of the above components are OK, then have your cooling system "pressure tested". This test should be done, before looking further at other electrical components.

Cheers,

Temp gauge reads hot when cold

That wire you are unplugging is pinched and being shorted to ground ! You need to trace that wire until you find it . Also if anyone has done any repairs recently you may want to start looking in that area .

Temp gauge bouncing up an down

That vehicle has two coolant temp sensors on it, both are on the passengers side of the end of the head, where the thermostat housing is. One has a two wire plug, this one tells your fans to come on the other is one single pin, this one is for your temp gauge. This sensor works off resistance, the higher the resistance the higher the gauge in the car goes. This sensor has probably grounded out and pegged your gauge in the car. Replace that sensor and you should be good to good, not too expensive either. Good luck.

Electric fan on radiator is goofing off. chk if it comes on at all but watching gauge and listening for fan start uo just above operating trmp. Fan helps cool under 35 mph. Forced air cools over 35 mph.

You probably have a faulty sensor at the transmission.

Go to your local parts store, and they can give you the part and how to install it. It's pretty easy.
