I don't have an autozone here in Manitoba. I called my dealer this morning, and they advised that there is an outstanding coil pack recall on my car. I am going to have it towed there to at least have the coil packs replaced.
If that doesn't fix the problem what else could it be? I will ask them to scan it, but not sure how honest they will be.

Hi,

As the check engine light is intermittently there, it shows that there is something wrong with the car. Obviously, the symptoms also confirmed the same. The first thing you need to do is to take the car to the autozone and get it scanned for codes. Print the codes and let me know so that we could proceed.

There is no point of being speculative or swapping the parts as scanning the car would most probably tell us the reason for the same.

You could revert with codes so that we could proceed.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

    Thanks for your response!!

Have you observed any black smoke or sound while driving at low rpm?

Let me know,so that i could tell you few more possibilities.

    Thanks!!

No I have not, however it was late last night. And I couldn't have seen. I am having it towed to a dealer as i found out there is an outstanding recall on the coil packs. I will report more afterward. (I am going to check for black smoke, etc, sulpher smell etc).

Also noticed last night that when i slowed down and car was idleing (and still running rough) that the car seemed to make a metal sound (sort of like clunking or the sounds it makes if you almost stall it)

Can you describe what you mean by "flat spot"? Do you mean that there is par of the rev range where there seems to be little power? Turbo engines tend to produce bursts of power when the turbo spools up. Does the "flat spot" happen at low revs? If so, your turbo isn't spooled up yet. As you accelerate and it fires up you feel a rush of power. just a guess, provide more details and we'll try to help

the turbo is a variable vane type
that means that there are vanes in the exhaust housing that redirects the exhaust gas flow onto the turbine blades to get extra boost at low rpms
those vanes are controlled by an actuator and vacuum hose from a sensor
the hoses get brittle from the heat and fails , the vanes can rust up and seize or the actuator doesn't get the message from the sensor
run the fault codes first , then take it to an accredited turbo professional shop for a proper diagnosis

2002 audi a4 quattro maintain acceleration problems

Likely a faulty diverter valve. If you have some decent mileage on the car the DV may be failing. It's a flimsy design with a plastic internal diaphragm. They're not terribly expensive (you can buy them at www.ecstuning.com or www.purems.com).

That being said, I'd still look around the turbo and intake systems for a loose, cracked, or disconnected vacuum hose - a vacuum leak should trip a check light but it may not always do so. Look for that, and if nothing is apparent, then I'd look at changing the DV.
