Question about 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

1 Answer

Ok Full fuel tank - I drive about 150 miles (more or less) and it doesn't hesitate while driving(no rough idles or acts like the gas is running out ) but when I turn the ignition off and restart it up it will not start up ... I hear the fuel pump kicking in and I have fuel pressure (tested the port and it sprays) . So I'll put in 1 gallon of gas in and starts right up no problem ... Then I go to a station to fill it up and only takes about 6 gallons to top it all the way off again . I have a 26 gallon tank so any ideas ???? I spoke with a friend and he suspects my float is stuck and my other friend thinks it's my injectors .. Fuel filter is new .

I would think the sender unit is not recording the correct amount of fuel left in tank , have an OBD check done and see if you get any codes to help narrow down the problem

SOURCE: I cant put more than 6 gallons in the 20 gallon

Every fuel tank has a breather pipe. If this gets blocked or the pipe is kinked, you will really struggle to put fuel in the tank.

Also, when you have the dog house off, remove the distributor cap and check for moisture.

Sounds like the fuel injectors are dirty. run a bottles of STP or other fuel injector cleaner in the next two tanks of gas. Also if not done before change the fuel filter inline from the tank. Or maybe change the air filter, especially if you have been driving in an area that is very dusty. If the filter is clogged or full it will restrict the flow. These are some cheap fixes. If they done work then you can have the injectors cleaned at a shop but that is a bit more expensive. I hope this helps.

Put a can of a product called "Seafoam" in the gas tank. Also do the following procedure.

Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Change air filter

Change PCV valve (under $10 item)

Ran a tank of Chevron gas with LUCAS fuel system cleaner additive.
