Question about 1993 Mazda Protege

1 Answer

Bought a used 93 mazda protege.(as is) A/C compressor does not start or engage.. When warmed up and running large primary fan is on. I fouund aux fan fuse removed from fuse box.under hood. I also found aux fan unplugged at connector.I replaced the fuse and compressor started working and main fan turned off at the same time. I reconnected aux fan (in front of radiator) and it did not work.I spun the fan manually and it started to work slowly then fuse blew within 5 min of replacing fuse. I tried it again this time I did not connect aux fan. Again fuse blew within 5 min. None of the wires look cut or spliced. Any ideas where to start. Rayy

SOURCE: 93 mazda protege clutch repair tips needed

to take out your drive shafts you first need to drain oil from gearbox.plug is on the bottom of box.when this is done remove wheels..take off your disc caliper (2 bolts).tie them up out of way.remove disc rotor(should just slide off).then you need to remove split pins from your steering rack(tierod).. 2 bolts where the part bolts to the strut.next is at base (lower control arm).you will see a bolt and nut(this will be tight to get out use a soft punch like copper or brass shaft to knock bolt out.dont damage thread).to replace this you have to make sure it sits in the right place or you will damage thread when you fit the bolt...when all this is done the hard part comes.the drive shaft is very tight in the gearbox due to a spring type circlip on the axle shaft.you have to wrench the shaft towards you to free it .some times you may have to get a very solid big flat screwdriver in between the gearbox and shaft to loosen past the clip.when it is free ,just slide out.when you have done what you need to do.assembly is just reversing whatyou have just done . to fill gearbox up you have to take out the speedo cable and speedo drive from the gearbox (at back off motor,1 little bolt).top up .you have a mark on the drive to tell you the level.hope this helps (have fun)

There are two bolts on the side of the fuse itself. Under the fuse box on each side. Unbolt those and it will come out.

did you check the voltage and amperage ratings of your battery compared to the standard preferred levels using a multimeter.if the levels are too low,try charging your battery manually and also check the generator unit in the car responsible for charging your battery. thanks for using fixya!

common issue is the compressor clutch is bad. check the electric fan on the radiator with the key off. try to turn the blade by hand and make sure it turns. If not replace the fan.

What is the "Hold" button for on the '93 Mazda Protege gear shift? (A light that says, "Hold" keeps blinking on and off on my dashboard...I'm assuming they are somehow related?)

hold is used to hold the gears longer in an auto like sports shift mode on newer cars, it should come on and then switch off at start up unless you have it engaged, if its continuingly blinking you have an issue with your gearbox as the auto box will run its own little self diagnostic on start up

Fan relay not working , fan keeps going on and off wont stay running

One of your fans works off the coolant temperature sensors input and will only engage when the coolant temperature reaches and/or exceeds a certain preset degree. The other runs off of your a/c compressor and when it engages so will the auxiliary or secondary cooling fan. Start the engine cold, turn on the a/c and listen for the secondary fan to engage then as it warms up listen to see if the primary fan engages. when it reaches running temperature. 2003 Protege 5 overheating on long runs (> 20 min). Overheated today while driving at interstate speeds for > 15 min. Lost the coolant. Refilled with coolant. Return drive maintained normal engine...

Sounds like you have coolant leak if you are loosing coolant or a bad thermostat. I would replace the thermostat, they run about $10. The other fan is an aux fan and will only run when the a/c unit is on.

When I first start my 1995 Mazda Protege, it will not go into gear unless you let the car warm up for at least 10 minutes or longer

If you have an automatic transmission, check the transmission fluid level. If the fluid level is low, the transmission will not engage.

If you have a manual transmission, check the clutch fluid level. Look for a leaky master cylinder or slave cylinder.

Sure take your buddy with you when you go so he can drive you away while they fix it but you do the talking with your buddy standing by ready to leave. Yes low on freon condensate drain stopped up fan belt loose or needes replaced. This is an old car and the mechanics will likly find many things wrong with it make sure they know that you what them to run it awile after it's fixed so that it in with some gas in the tank so they won't worry about running out. Should get alot of repairs done for less than $200

My mazda 2002 protege is running hot when ac is on

your car temp is hot because the air-con automatic fan/cooler on the condenser is not functioning. check the electrical connections from the switch as well as from the compressor. otherwise check the thermostat. the fan should run when the aircon is switched on.
