To diagnose which part is faulty, unfortunately the system should be checked with the Lucas tester, without it, it is time consuming and very difficult to find. Finding someone with this tester is also hard, except maybe at the dealer, that is, an old established dealer that still may have the tester.
I do have this tester, but i am in Croatia, no good to you iam afraid.

Throwing black smoke and back fire on 1986 nissan hardbody

black smoke is a sign of over fuelling ( leaking injector washers, excessive fuel pressure , choke on float not working needle and seat not shutting off,. This will also cause back firing as the fuel is accumulating in the inlet manifold and being ignited by an exhaust valve opening

Automatic choke problems

Would you consider retrofitting a manual choke? Then you wouldn't have to rely on "automatic" stuff any more. Manual chokes are cheap & simple & reliable.

Accelerator stuck

Hey. do you have an automatic choke on the car? If so, it could be that the automatic choke is stuck in the open position. You could trace the the accelerator cable to see if it`s getting stuck. I had this problem with the automatic choke on an Escort Ghia once and then installed a manual choke instead.
