Warm up i have always known to warm up a car in the morning before driving, i have a 78 camaro with a straight 6, of course it idles high when you first start it till you gas it to bring it down to take off, is that right? i let it idle high for a good warm up for 5 to 8 minutes.is that right too? i was just told by a mechanic i dont need to let it warm up at all, not even in the morning, just take off. is that true? then why does ti idle so high if you dont have to warm it up?

Yes the idle being high cold is normal, so you are ok. It is a good idea to gas it before you drive it to bring the idle down some. However, you do not have to let it warm up that long, about three to five min. is more than enough for an older car. The mechanic that told you you don't have to warm the car up is wrong. You should always let the car warm up. When the engine cools most of the oil goes back into the oil pan. The engine needs to warm up to thin the oil, and lubricate the internal parts of the engine properly. Not warming up the car, doesn't matter if it is fuel injected or carb., could lead to serious engine problems later. Hope this helped.

The high idle is caused by the choke and the high idle on the carb. It is working normal and you do won't to warm up this motor before going. When it is warm and you hit the gas it activates the choke pull off to bring the idle to normal. Your mechanic is used to fuel injection that will control the fuel/air mix according to temp. I still let my injected cars warm up so the oil can thin a little. If you jump on the highway with cold thick oil it can all wind up in the to of the motor.

Try cleaning the throttle body and the idle speed control valve, they get full of sludge and this causes stalling. Use a product called CRC Throttle valve cleaner on both parts, DO NOT USE CARB CLEANER IT WILL RUIN THE PARTS.

I have a 91 tercel that will not pass smog, unable to read codes, idles too high that if you put the car in gear before it warms up its jerks hard, appears to idle normally after warmed up, smokes pretty...

The smoking is probably due to worn valve guides.. the oil from the top..the head.. is leaking past the valve stem into the cylinder.. next morning or a few hours later when you start the car.. it burns this oil up..and the problem although still there is much less noticeable.. cause the amount leaking is minute..it's being burned as you drive.. otherwise it takes a while for it to accumulate.. It could mean a minor head/top end rebuild to a minor overhaul..

The emissions problem and the idle problem may be linked.

First make sure your throttle cable is clean and working properly. They can get dirty.. sticky..or even a weak spring.. but dirt rust and grime..biggest culprits.

There is an IAC (Idle air control) valve attached to the throttle body.. you may be able to spray carb cleaner into the closed throttle body to clean it.. You may need to replace this part. It can really get clogged with carbon.. and cause this high idle problem.

Next.. replace or remove/clean/reinstall the EGR valve...probably better off just replacing it.

Check all vacuum lines for cracks..replace as needed..vacuum hose is cheap.. and lastly.. do a minor tune up.. plug wires.. plugs (properly gapped of course). air filter and fuel filter..

Your car will probably pass the smog check even with the cold startup burning oil issue.. that's not what's causing it to fail..it's the EGR valve and possilbe lack of recent tune up.

You can continue to add oil between changes.. use a heavier weight.. and check often.. Once consumption gets more than a quart or so between changes..you can contemplate the real fix... or start pouring anything with the word miracle into it.(grin).

Great little car.. Best of luck!

2001 camaro 3800 eng. when eng is cold oil pressure is high after warms up oil pressure drop very low at idle. why??

When the engine and oil are cold it will show a high pressure because of the viscosity of the oil. When it warms up the oil is thinner. If it doesn't drop below 20-25 psi at warm idle I wouldn't worry about it as that is normal.
