1998 land rover discovery. Just replaced spark plugs Bosch. I have a problem that I need help with. Took plugs out, rolled it back off of ramps in neutral. Then I placed spark plugs back in and now it...

the starter relay is not making contact or the wire going to the starter has bad connection OR starter brushes are sticking and not making contact with the starter rotor. Try tapping on the starter with a hammer--use a long screwdriver or metal rod if necessary. Check the connection on the starter motor and the solenoid. Check the headlight brightness when you try the starter.

When I try to start, why does it sound like the starter is spinning and not engaging anything?

You may need to take the starter off and have it bench tested.
The problem could be the starter drive, or you could have some missing teeth on the flywheel. The drive is supposed to extend when the starter spins to make contact with the teeth on the flywheel. You could also try turning the crank a few inches and try the starter again.

Starter replacement 2008 Mailbu

Maybe the starter control circuit has an issue

Try jumper cables to the starter before you remove it

Try just a small wire to the solenoid,it could be bad
& you don't need the entire starter

Any starter only has 2 or 3 bolts

If you need help ,then you dont have
the tools or skills to be under there

Clicks when turning the key, but does not fire. Battery and cables are good.

will try to help. with headlights on and then try to start do head lights go dim? if so,try jump start with booster cables from another car. lights don't go dim? check starter connections for loose or burnt wires. all that good? suggest you replace the starter. if engine turns over,it's not your starter. sorry, but have to ask just to be sure we've covered all the bases.did you check for a bad starter fuse before anything? had to ask. bad starter colenoids click which means they are trying to start, but the starter bendix is'nt kicking out to turn the engine over. hope this helps and as always thank you for choosing

1997 t-bird clicks when trying to start replaced

The starter selinoid is on top of the starter. This engages the starter when you turn the car over. Did the starter you bought have a selinoid on it?

I have 2001 ford winstar. There is no fire at starter when you hold the key over. Could the neutral safety switch cause this?

Yes! Another area to check is the wiring at the Starter Solenoid and to the Starter itself. You don't mention how many miles are on your vehicle. Many Starters fail at High Mileage when most of the driving has been Short Haul. The Starter is typically good to somewhere over 100K Miles for normal driving usage. Short Haul, many starts, reduces overall life of the Starter. Winter driving where Salt is used on the roads can cause corrosion on these critical connections too. Carefully Inspect each termination from Battery to the Starter and Ground cable connections too. Not to mention the Starter Mounting Bolts.

It wont start

That sounds more like a dead battery than anything else. The bendix, the bit that engages the starter to the flywheel, usually goes bad a bit more slowly and causes more dramatic persistent grinding. A bad starter is also possible, as are bad battery cables. The starter mortor and bendix are both replaced when you install a rebuilt starter. If a jump start doesn't solve the problem, and connecting a jumper cable directly from the + battery terminal to the starter motor doesn't help then replace the starter. If it does help, then the problem is probably the battery cables.
