Question about 2004 Lincoln Navigator

My Navigator makes a rattling noise at startup and then it continues to make rattling noise while idling. What could be? Possible lifters, rocker arms, and pitons rods possibly?

If rattling sounds like you have a bad pulley bearings on pulley going out pop hood and look at belt with running see if it is moving correctly not going in a back and forth motion like warped llook at pulleys see if they are displaced

I want to add that i replace all stationery pulleys, and the tensioner pulley, and the rattle is still their only upon startup which is made me believe it is timing chain related,

My Lincoln Continental 2000 Model oil light came on engine stopped after 25 feet. would not restart even though oil full. The car started the next day, but had a rattling sound at the top of the motor

Oil light is rather important it goes out if oil pressure is good comes on if oil pressure is low when it comes on damage is expected with continued operation like wearing of main bearings and pistons and cylinders can lead to a engine rebuild

How do you adjust the values on my jeep wrangler 4.0 6cyl

as they are hydulic you should not have to adjust them,if they are rattling,it's usually due to poor oil change history, try engine flush and you may have to remove sump afterwoods if the gunk blocks up the oil pickup, filters block and unfiltered oil then circulates throughout engine and makes lifters noisy,to check hyd lifters you need a "bleed down bar"to compress lifter and measure gap between rocker and valve,if it does have adjustable rockers then it's done with engine idleing with rocker cover off ,back off nut till it rattles, thentighen it down till it stops and then 1/4 more turn

Lifter noise

yes they do wear out and will not hold oil pressure. I would be checking the pivot points of the rockers and the face of the rockers where they hit on the valve end. I say this because if the hydraulic tappets were so bad you would have very low oil pressure at idle.

1985 cj7 jeep 258 engine is noisy on idle. rattles constantly , rebuilt engine twice and prob won't go away.

This is kind of hard to judge without hearing it. Lets say the noise is the pellets in the Catalytic converter that some types of automakers used, with low flow at idle, the loose pellets can bounce around until the flow increases and pins them to the insides of the Catalytics.

However, if you rebuilt the motor you would know some mechanical stuff. I can move on to more possibilities.

Oil pressure starvation can make the pushrods rattle in the rocker arms. The engine oil pressure will cushion the critical area between the rocker arm and the pushrod seat.

On the rebuilds, have you worked on the heads? Like valve spring tension and pushrod clearance? I have had engines that would idle perfect until accelerated and return to idle clanging and missing. The valve springs were shot. Then I have had some GM motors that had hydraulic lifters yet the pushrods were different lengths and that is how the pushrod clearance was made; by changing individual pushrods to get the correct clearance.

This is something that can occur when the valve seats are cut. The valve stem can ride up into the head slightly when the seats are cut.

Now you may have replaced the camshaft or the lifters or not. But it is recommended that each lifter is paired with a camshaft lobe. If you mixed the lifters into different positions, you may have distortions that are resulting in noisy clearance problems. For that matter, camshaft bearings may be loose.

The Jeep and American Motors cars used a 232 CID engine too. Can't say what components were different but you may have mixed parts.

Now some models used a Rattle or knock sensor, and in the old days, you could get a rattle from weak distributor springs in the breaker plate. The mechanical advance would throw out too fast.

I am curious. Would like to know what you found.

Will intake gasket leak make the lifters tic when first starting

I dont think and intake gasket will cause lifter noise. It may cause a rough idle and or a miss at idle on cold start up . as the engine warms up the miss or rough idle will decrease . As for the lifter noise this could be cause by the lifter bleeding down or poor oil presure . On your model of engine there is no adjustment on the rocker arms for lifter noise . They are a 0 lash type .

Loud rattle noise in Camshaft

First, your engine has rocker arms, if you have a 4 cylinder you have 8 rocker arms, and if it is a 6 cylinder you have 12 rocker arms. Now if it is indeed a rocker arm making the noise, the cause is most likely a bad lifter or a worn cam shaft.

check oil pressure possible valve tapping -start vehicle and open hood if the noise is on top and sounds like metal tapping u may have a problem with a bad lifter ,oil pressure not lubing head, bent valve/push rod, loose rocker arm. if noise towards front check belts and pulleys-power steering level

This may be due to old oil. I'd first try changing the oil. The viscosity of old oil may be to thin causing serious run off in the top end. All of the lubrication may be off of the valve assembly causing it to chatter and make these noises until the motor can re-lubricate the valve train.

Also, it may be due to low oil, to heavy of a wieght of oil (such as 15w40 or 20x50). I believe with most of the 04's the recommended oil weight is 5w30.

Try an oil change and see if the noise goes away. If it doesn't I'd do a quick visual inspection under the hood for rattling parts while the engine is running. It could just be a loose housing or something causing the noise. Hope this helps bud!
