Question about 1999 Dodge Ram

1 Answer

I have a 1999 dodge 1500 2wd truck w/a 5.9 engine and a 3speed automatic w/OD. The tranny does not want to shift gears on its own, until hits about 2500rpm. Slips back& forth between 1st & 2nd when still cool. After about 10 minutes of driving, shifts normal, but still only at high rpmn & about 10 mph higher than normal. Any suggestions?

Yes sounds like the one of your transmission shift solenoids is out or going out on you check them out see if can see if wires loose or if they are faulty try get a diagram see if can find out which solenoid controls 1 and 2 gear theres 4 solenoids total i believe but this is your problem

I have a 1995 Suzuki Sidekick jx it will not drive forward but will drive in reverse. I put oil in car and the transmisson fluid is full what could be the problem

95 jx
but is it 3speed or 4 speeds.
if 3speed, the lever not really going to Drive?
if that does happen the trans is bad.
if 4sp, (see od light see od switch and P/N switch that is 4speed
as is the 2 on gears, if 4speed it has a TCM brain
the tranny brain, and we can scan, it , or more accurately a jumper
clip , and the TCM flashes out codes
is the the OD lamp flashing, yes that is the TCM begging for help.

next time post trans gear counts, as we can not guess that ever
nor engine. 95 had 2 engine choices.

the 3speed also has a filter in the pan area (above)
if packed in junk,, as they all do. it will only shift hot. or not at all.
its called a full flush, with filter. not a lame drain and fill.

Tranny locked in first gear

A/t box.
3speed or 4, they offered both in 1996.
my guess is the 4speed, which is electronically shifted
the car has TCM, if you unplug it (under dash) the Tranny swithes
to a manual trans, and you can shift it manually
see that trick here. (both)
http://www.fixkick.com/slush-pump.html

the --4 SPEED. 03-72LE
see it skip second gear in manual mode.....
http://www.fixkick.com/slush-pump.html#4speed_fast

when posting , always state tranny type
or show a photo of the shifter
or at the least tell all shifter , locations.

unique
4SP SHIFT CONSOLE LABELS: P R N D 2 L , 4sp has an OD button and a Power button. OD overdrive and PN (power /normal)

what to do?
check all fuses first.
reseat the TCM, look for damage in side it.
check fluid levels , read operators guide, never guess, or overfill it.
RTM; read the guide then act.
make sure shifter actually moves tanny lever to DRIVE.
bad cable, or is loose or damaged.

does tranny shift to 2nd gear from 1st if starting off in 2nd?
?????????????????????????????

tell more get more.... ask.

Wont shift till 4000 rpm

must be a slush pump automatic.

how many doors on car

what engine/? 8v or 16v.

the 2door has a 3speed AT.

the 4door has the 4speed.

both those can slip , is the tranny slipping??????

if not, then its SHIFTING late (fact)

ok both 3/4 speed has kick down cable and if stuck in the pulled out

position, will shift late, (it thinks you are passing all the time)

The 4speed , is the OD lamp stuck on?

the 3speed has more fail pathes here.

bad Vacuum modulator, bad inside, leaking, causeing late shifts.

bad Governor, or its screens packed with crap. or just bad.

the Gov. senses the cars speed, tail shaft RPM is how it does this.

ever do a full transmission service. if not why not.

seems it ready ,no?

Location of over drive relay

3speed trans or 4sp?
only 4sp has OD.
there are 2 things, 1 is overdrive, and other is TCC lookup
Torque converter Clutch lockup,
the TCC relay is in the group of relays, in front of battery
the 0D is inside the tranmission bottom (above the oil pan)

did you use a scan tool and get DTC errors. P07xx? if yes what?
OD lamp flashes funnY?
or did you FEEL OD fail.?

the bottom shift solenoid logic,
1st --------2nd-----3rd -------- 4th
sol1--12v--- 12v---0v------------ 0v

ol2 -- 0v --- 12v-----12v----------- 0v
this is the logic of the shifter connector
if you see 0v on both , its in )D, and of OD is dead (4thgear)
the the tranny is bad.

Transmission shifting problem

You need to get a hold of your local Chevy dealer. There was a bullitin on slide shifting on these years. There is a wire that has to be jumped on the computer to solve this problem. Hopefully it hasn't already ruined the transmission

Goes into neutral and then shifts hard into 1st on slowdown

It sounds like your input clutch seals are rolling. Is the check engine light on. It could also be the pressure control solenoid could be causing the problem aswell

95 dodge dakota having hard time shifting.

Try a tranny service change a place that changes the filter the pan gasket and fluid not some of these quick places that just drain a couple quarts out of the tranny lines and thats it that wont help but a complete tranny service should help.
