Question about 1996 Ford Escort 4 Door

1 Answer

I have a 96 escort 1.9 liter I just got and the auto transmission takes a while to shift so I have to let the car warm up a while first so it shifts quick. A mechanic said some escorts trans are like that and you have to let it warm up, is this true?

If it warms up and runs ok? then i would say that it needs a tranny flush and new fluid and if dont fix it i would check the transmission control unit and then check the transmission solenoids see if they getting proper voltage and not damaged and you can have them taken to autozone and they can check them <-- i believe/ u can usuas;;y tell iff one not working by its broke or really bad looking hope this helps

My '96 Ford Escort (automatic transmission) cranks and idles fine it will shift and move well in reverse but when i shift down to drive it will buck and stall. Could this be a motor mount issue?

1994 Ford Escort, auto trans, 83,000 mi, randomly won't shift from 1st to 2nd, randomly loses power at hwy speeds

It could be an internal problem with a pump, or it could be it needs to be serviced really bad. Most 'oil change' places can also do transmission services... I'd try that first, before paying a big repair bill to a shop. good luck.

Escort wagon automatic wont shift into any gear

You may need the transmission serviced with new fluid, so have that done first, if that doesn't cure the problem you will need an overhaul.

Transmission does not shift into gear at times even though rpms go up. if i shift to neutral and back to drive real quick , transmission shifts into drive gear ok.

its the velve block inside the gearbox its sticking it needs a strip down and new seals fitted,,,thats pricy too,,,,there is an oil that you could try out first,,its called "smooth shift" or "auto box shift" its just tiped into the gearbox

1996 Dodge Ram Transmission shifting problem

I had the same problem with my 96 Ram 1500. I thought I was going to have to pull it out and get it rebuilt or just replace it. That was at 134,000Km it's now got 210,000 and shifting like a dream. What I did to solve the problem was this, as follows:
1. No lucas transmission Fix makes things worse.
2. Get your self a new transmission filter and gasket
3. Grab Gunk transmission medic 12oz
4. Grab 7 Liters of Valvoline ATF+4 transmission fluid (Made for chrysler transmissions)
5. Drop the trans pan and drain all the oil, clean pan and magnet
6. start truck for 5 seconds and the pump will pour out another 1 liter
7. re-install filter, gasket and pan, then add your Valvoline ATF+4
8. Add, the valvoline, transmission medic and make sure you have the right level of fluid

That solved my transmission problems, instantly it was shifting better, I no longer had to let off the gas to make it shift. Now if you have large pieces of metal on the magnet, and it's totally covered in filings, you might want to consider rebuilding the trans. My magnet had usual clutch.

Anyhow good luck, let me know if it did the trick for you.
