Question about 1998 Buick Century

1 Answer

Purchased new 1998 buick century now has 50,000 mi, with no so far. Like to keep it that way: considering the following, change the trans-fluid, and flush the radiator, replace the fan belt, the shocks, and maybe the water hoses. our only complaint is the front air scoop scrapes at any deep dip, may stiffer shocks would fix that. What do you think.

Transmoissin

You could try having the fluid changed but beware, if it hasn't been changed in the last 100k miles or so the fresh detergent in the trans fluid can sometimes clean too well and leave you needing a new transmission. If you know it's been over 100k without a fluid change my suggestion would be to keep nursing the trans along and start saving money for a new transmission or a new car.

My sons first car he is looking at 1998 oldsmobile intrigue. What is the transmission life expectancy with 168000 if it has been well maintained.

An "intriguing" question, and one with out a real answer, except that if it has been well maintained, then to keep it that way. The transmissions on these GM's are average, like any car ,and can be as good or better than the engine. If there is concern for this, ask for records of transmission filter and fluid changes, which should happen roughly after every 50,000 mi. After purchasing, have the transmission fully flushed to include the torque converter.

DIRTY TRANSMISSION OIL .

no but a low fluid level could cause a slip telling the ecm there is a slip top it off then clear the code and drive a few miles if this code comes back i would say there is internal damage to the tranny

Could be something sticking.Trans filter should be changed at least every 40,000-50,000 miles. If it has never been changed or has over 50,000 since the last filter service would start with a fluid flush and filter change.Well hope this helps, and good luck.

Is there any thing othert than chainging tranmission fluid reguarly to help transmission life on 1997 chysler concorde

if you never changed the trans fluid yet, don't
the shavings that are worn mixed with the trans fluid must be retained in your trans to keep the trans shifting smoothly
I have seen plenty of people changing there trans fluid for the first time with 50,000 miles then the trans will slip

Speedometer wont move and the miles on the car wont show i changed the fuse still same problem (1998 Buick Century)

This could be the speed sensor in the transmission. I believe it is electric on the 98 takes about 15min to change and is located on the long end of the trans.

How much trans fluid goes in 1989 buick century?

Automatic Transmission, Total Fill
4 speed THM440-T4..........7.6 liters
3 speed THM125C..........6.6 liters

If your just topping off the fluid, make sure the transmission is at it's operating temperature and the level should between add and full on the transmission dipstick while the engine is running on level ground in park. Take two reading if not three, the last reading is always the one your go with.
Good luck and hope this helps.

Usaully the shifting is computer controlled, and sounds more like a solenoid valve not functioning properly. Take it to another shop that does tranny work, and see what they say. Don't tell them that the dealer told you that you needed a trans, as they will probably agree right off the bat and try and sell you one too.
