What side of the solenoid does the purple power wire go on ....my truck wont turn over the starter , I just replaced gthe transmission thank you 1

My old chevelle wont turn over by key


Check the purple wire that goes to the starter solenoid from the ignition starter switch, when the key is turned to where it starts the engine then there should be 12 volts at the post on the starter solenoid (solenoid mounted to starter) that that Purple wire connects to, if not you most likely need a new ignition starter switch or the purple wire does not have continuity all the way to the started. You can also check the purple wire at the point it comes through the engine bulkhead/firewall to see if the start signal is reaching that far.

Have 98 grandam no power at purple wire at starter


Purple wire runs from Park/Neutral position switch (or clutch engage switch M/T transmission) straight to the starter solenoid. First, assuming 60A ignition switch fuse under the hood in the power distribution center good, check for 12V at YEL wire (from ignition switch) at the switch when ignition moved to START position. If 12V present at YEL, but absent at PPL (also in START position), replace the Park/Neutral switch. If no voltage present at YEL wire then must verify 12V at RED (242) to ignition switch next. If present replace ignition switch. Hope this helps.

2000 chev wont start at key


From the ignition switch there is a yellow wire that is for the starter. probe it when trying to start. If you have no voltage replace the switch. Also, I believe there is a fusible link in the wire by the starter. It will be a different color than purple. Probe on the back side of it to see if there is voltage at start up. If so, replace with the smae color link.

I think the purple wire (or maybe the yellow) from the neutral safety switch goes to the coil side of the starter relay, turning it on so power is sent from there to the starter solenoid. You could check for this signal to the relay with a test light. The key must be held in start while you probe the other two terminals for the relay. If the signal is there, either a bad relay or the coil side of relay is not grounded properly. It is possible that the coil side ground is the neutral safety switch-grounding the relay's coil side only in park or neutral-in which case the nagging light on shifter (between off and run, it only works?) may be telling you the safety switch is the problem.

You may need to look at a wiring diagram, Greg. But the starter relay is the last component in the start circuit before the starter solenoid. From battery to ignition switch to "crank" fuse to neutral safety switch to starter relay to starter solenoid to starter-and back to battery through ground. That is the start circuit. Just that the wiring tying them all together makes it complicated.

I will try to help, powell. Your start circuit from battery to ignition switch to starter-and back to battery. You may need to check every thing here, including the grounds, for a loose connection, or just possibly a failing part.
If only complaint is intermittent starter action, and no other problems with ignition switch, let's assume switch is good, so battery to ignition switch is good. Now from the switch, a yellow start wire goes to the instrument panel fuse block, to "crank" fuse #8 (10 amp), from there a purple wire goes to the safety switch. If manual it is a clutch pedal position switch (simple on/off switch-when clutch down switch is on). If automatic, purple wire goes to Transmission Range Switch on the transm.-in park or neutral the purple wire has continuity in and out of switch.
From that switch, the purple wire goes to the starter relay (under hood fuse-relay center). Now the relay: purple wire in start will energize the relay- wire goes to coil side of relay, and then coil side goes to ground. On relay power side, the power feed is a red wire-and it is the same red wire that initially sends power to the ignition switch. A 40 amp fuse in fuse-relay center sends power to ignition switch, and a splice goes to the starter relay as the power feed for relay. When relay is energized, contacts close, and power is sent from relay to the starter solenoid, again on a purple wire. When solenoid contacts close, starter motor is connected to the big battery cable on the starter.

There is your start circuit. try a new or different relay, try a new or test the clutch switch (or transm. range switch). Buy a $5 test light and use it to check where power is lost when starter won't operate. Hold key in start and check if fuse #8 is getting power. Check the safety switch, with key held in start, the purple wire should be hot. Check if relay has a power feed (pull relay out and check terminals) and if relay coil has a power signal in start. Check the relay's coil side ground. If that ground is intermittent, relay won't work.
When it won't start, use a test light, you should be able to find it.

Starter wiring


According to my wiring diagram, you should only have one small wire which is purple. That wire goes on the R or S terminal. The I terminal was used for cars with point system ignition before electronic ignition.
The purple wire should be hot when the key switch is in the start position.

When you turn the key to on, does everything come on, all the dash and warning lights?
When you turn the key to cranking, power is sent to the solenoid mounted on the starter, through a small purple wire. This is what engages the starter. But the path from the ignition switch to that solenoid travels through a starter relay and a neutral safety switch(for automatics) or a clutch safety switch (for manual transaxles). Check for power with a testlight or voltmeter at that purple wire on the starter solenoid when someone holds the key in crank. If you have power there, the solenoid is bad, and starter needs to come out to replace the solenoid. Doesn't sound like that, though. Usually they make a clicking sound when, or before going out. I think maybe the relay is bad or the neutral safety switch may be your problem(or the clutch switch if you have a manual).

88 s10 2.8 5 speed have power to lights, blower, radio, but wont turn over when turning key no clicking nothing wont even start or turn over by crossing solenoid


Since you have power to your accessories, here are a few more things to consider:
1: Automatic transmission not in park or the neutral safety switch is faulty
2: On manual transmissions clutch pedal not depressed or or clutch start switch failure
3: Broken or loose wires in the starting circuit. Inspect all wires and connectors at the battery, starter solenoid, and ignition switch
4: Starter motor pinion jammed in flywheel ring gear. Manual transmission. place transmission in gear and rock the vehicle to manually turn the engine. Remove starter and inspect pinion and flywheel

Try this have someone take a hammer and tap on the side of the starter while someone holds key to start position.If it kicks over then the bendix is bad in the starter and you'll need to replace it.If it still does nothing its probably the solenoid on the starter.Also voltage at the solenoid on switch side ( should be the purple wire ) you should have 12-12.6 volts.If you don't check for power at ignition switch.Its not hard to replace just make sure you take ground off battery.Usually 2 bolts and 2 wires power cable and switch wire.

Pontiac Montana starting problem


All 4 power wires go together on the large center stud on the solenoid.
The purple wire goes on the small stud.
The purple wire supplys the trigger signal when the key is turned to the start position.Since your solenoid is clicking when the key is turned to start this is working properly.
I would check battery connections and then check power connections on solenoid again.Make sure all connections are clean and tight.
