Question about 2002 Nissan Maxima

1 Answer

2003 Nissan Maxima SE with bad pining at partial throttle only across all RPM but worse at lower range. Replaced MAF and cleaned fuel injectors with results certainly no better (maybe a little worse). What do I do from here, plugs, coils, some other sensor? Thanks.

I don't want to be sarcastic here, but I see you throwing parts at it, and getting frustrated. You may be better off having it, at least diagnosed professionally, and going from there.
Almost all of what I read on this site and Iam seeing hundreds if not thousands of questions, I see a lot of parts going into vehicles and almost non of them made any sense. Todays vehicles are high tech and all electronic. You need to know those systems and theory to work on them, or leave the hood closed.

2001 nissan maxima gle it bogs down when i press on the gas, idles low at .5 rpm, dies when i start it i have to keep my foot on the gas, lights run dim when i come to a full stop it has 155,000 miles

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

As a first course of action, I strongly suggest that you replace the MAF (mass air flow) sensor and the TPS (throttle position sensor). If the MAF and TPS is faulty the RPM tends to go down or goes erratic. The MAF and TPS is located at the throttle body which is secured by small screws or bolts. It is visible which can easily be seen.

Once replaced you'll be good. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Here are the test procedure for a PO171 code.

1. Check and verify there are no vacuum leaks or unmetered air leaks.

2. Check and verify air filter, all inlet screens and throttle body are clear and clean (never use an aerosol cleaner to clean a throttle body, damage to the throttle body electronics may result. Use a rag dampened with cleaner to wipe the throttle clean)

3. Check and verify fuel pressure is 36 PSI at idle with vacuum to the fuel pressure regulator.

4. Check Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF) Grams/Second (G/S) readings as follows:

Idle (about 830 RPM) 3.5 G/S or more (4 to 4.5 G/S preferred).

2500 RPM no load, 9 to 15 G/S (11 to 12 G/S preferred).

Wide Open Throttle (WOT) road load (drive vehicle at 45 MPH in 3rd gear and perform a WOT acceleration, observe maximum indicated MAF G/S readings) 90 or more G/S should be present, (prefer above 100 G/S).

A MAF that exhibits consistently lower than normal G/S readings can cause a P0171 code to set. Please let me know if this information is helpful. Positive feedback is appreciated. Thank You!

TRY cleaning your throttle plate. these get some carbon buildup and will restrict airflow at idle and can cause the computer to try and compensate for it

sound like you have a bad fuel pressure regulator . check your fuel pressure. could also be a leaking injector. the fuel pressure test will tell you which one

Car dies when slowing down or stopping

Disconnect the air hose going to the Idle Air contorl Valve and plug the line with a small screw.
if the problem of the idle goes away and the car runs smooth and doesn't stall at stops, it's the air control valve housing sensor, it's basicall the whole unit thats no good. If it still stalls, clean the throttle body housing and all parts in where the air gets sucked in, put a rag underneath to keep the dirt from dripping down, start the car with somebody inside the car reving up the engine to 2000rpm's to 2500rpm's, then spray in to the throttle with burst of throttle cleaner and you will see the gunk keep coming out, you may have to change your spark plugs after this is done also.

Good Luck BigWillie
