Question about 2003 Ford Focus

1 Answer

My grandsons girl-friend has a 2003 ford focus I have been working on now for over a week. I have replaced the coil pack, put new plugs in it and taken the exhaust off and it doesn't seem to be pluged,. When it has been running for awhile it looses power and the exhaust makes a funny sound and it doesn't seem like it is firing on 1 and 4. I drove it 13 miles on the new plugs and it did ok then went back to its **** of loosing power. Do you have any ideas to what it could be.

What size is the engine? How many miles are on this car? Were you able to pull a trouble code from the PCM (computer)? If not, autozone will attach a code reader fro free to see if a trouble code exsists, just thought i'd mention this.

Ok, I'll wait to hear what they find.

  • GetMeOttaHere Sep 15, 2010

The vehicle has a VIN letter that is eithe a V,P or N in the Vin number. Also, the coil pack, is it the type that spark plug wires connect to it or is it one assembly complete with the wires?

I'm not sure if I will be onsite when you return tonight.

I have a ford focus 2003 model.plugs number 2 and 3 are missfiring.is there posibbility that the Ecu has packed?

Check the connection to your coil pack for a corded or broken wire going into the connector. The coil pack is where the plug wires come from. Ford has a pigtail kit to replace it if it is bad. Or the coil pack is bad. Top, driver side of engine.

Only 1 in 10,000 PCMs is defective.

How do I change the coil pack in my 2005 ford taurus

Welcome to Fixya.

Here's the procedure how to replace the ignition coil pack of your car.

•1
Understand basic safety procedures. Any time you work on your Ford Focus, you should set the emergency brake and disconnect the negative, or ground, cable from the battery. Some mechanics recommend you isolate the cable to prevent accidental contact, which could spark a connection.
•2
Release the spark plug wires from the Ford Focus ignition coil pack. You may need to pinch or press a release to unlock the wires.
•3
Use a socket set or a small wrench to unbolt the ignition coil connectors. You also need to undo the capacitor electrical connectors. As you work, make note of which connectors go where--this pays off you when you reassemble the parts.
•4
Locate the bracket that holds the ignition coil pack and the electrical capacitor in place. Undo the fasteners that secure them.
•5
Separate the Ford Focus ignition coil pack from the mounting system. Replace the old Focus ignition coil pack with a new one. Verify the new ignition coil pack works with your engine, even if you use a universal ignition coil pack.
•6
Reassemble the parts. If you have a Torque wrench, use it to tighten the ignition coil bolts with 7 inch pounds of torque (10 Nm).

Thank you for using Fixya!

Will crank but won't start

I have seen a lot of trouble with coil packs lately. The first thing I would do is put a coil back on that I knew would make the motor run. It would not surprise me to hear that the new one is also bad. I don't think I would buy a new one until I was sure that the one on the car is bad. my suggestion is a no-cost method to know for sure.
If that does not work I would get a gauge and check the fuel pressure.
Also check to see that the timing belt is not broken. Look in the oil cap filler to see if the valve train moves while someone cranks the motor.
This will keep you busy for a while. Let me know what happens.

it sounds like a problem with the coil pack or plug leads its a very common problem with them . I would suggest you replace both coil pack and plug leads at same time.
