Do the gauges and warning lights work with key on? If not, check fusible links, AM1 for ignition key power. If the gauges/warning lights work, the key switch has power, so you can follow it to the starter solenoid. The start wire out of the ignition switch is a black/white wire, this is the hot wire to the solenoid, and only has power when key is held in start. With automatics, there is only one switch-a neutral start switch- between the ignition switch and the solenoid on the starter .

With a manual transmission, the black-white start wire goes to both a starter relay and a clutch start switch (on the clutch pedal), those two work together to send the power on to the starter solenoid. So, no crank, good battery, power to key, follow the black/white wire, the start relay and the clutch switch, to the starter solenoid- a hot wire there turns the starter motor on.

We put the new starter on today, and the car still won't start. We are thinking it's the starter relay. What else can be wrong with the car? can you please help us we depend on that car. Thank you


There is no starter relay shown in a wiring diagram. The only thing between the ignition switch and the starter solenoid is the park/neutral switch (or the clutch pedal position switch on manuals).

Do the warning lights and gauges come on with key on? That would verify power is into the switch and being sent out. The small purple wire on the starter solenoid should have power on it when the key is held in start position. If it does, recheck your starter and battery connections. When the purple wire energizes the solenoid, the starter motor should crank the engine.
If no power on the purple wire in start, check the neutral safety switch or the clutch switch if a manual. The start wire out of the ignition switch is a yellow wire, and the wire from either safety switch to the starter solenoid is a purple wire.
(The power to the ignition switch is from the 50 amp Ignition fuse in the under hood fuse block.) See? The positive battery cable is connected to the starter, but not to the starter motor. When the key is in start, the hot purple wire energizes the solenoid and the battery cable is connected to the starter motor.

I think the purple wire (or maybe the yellow) from the neutral safety switch goes to the coil side of the starter relay, turning it on so power is sent from there to the starter solenoid. You could check for this signal to the relay with a test light. The key must be held in start while you probe the other two terminals for the relay. If the signal is there, either a bad relay or the coil side of relay is not grounded properly. It is possible that the coil side ground is the neutral safety switch-grounding the relay's coil side only in park or neutral-in which case the nagging light on shifter (between off and run, it only works?) may be telling you the safety switch is the problem.

You may need to look at a wiring diagram, Greg. But the starter relay is the last component in the start circuit before the starter solenoid. From battery to ignition switch to "crank" fuse to neutral safety switch to starter relay to starter solenoid to starter-and back to battery through ground. That is the start circuit. Just that the wiring tying them all together makes it complicated.

I have a 1982 dodge ram w150 318 4 speed when i turn the key i lose everything let me start from the beginning my truck started up then died then when I went to restart I heard a thunk then nothing last...


What happens when you turn the key to on? Do the warning lights and gauges come on? Turning the key to start, do the lights and gauges stay on? Just nothing at the starter?

Or does power just shut off when you turn the key to start, everything goes out, no warning lights or gauges? Then check cables, battery terminals, grounds for clean tight connections. There is a problem between the battery and the ignition switch.

If the switch still receives and sends power out (to the dash, for one) but start circuit is not working (from battery to ignition switch to clutch switch to starter relay to starter solenoid to starter to ground-and back to battery), then here's where we at: with key off, use a small screwdriver and short the big cable at starter to the starter solenoid small wire connection, or use a small jumper wire to do the same-battery cable at starter to the small wire connection on the starter solenoid. Starter motor should spin and crank engine. Does it? If so, start checking the start wire out of ignition switch for power when key is held in start. If you have a clutch switch, check for power in with key in start. Should have battery voltage to the clutch switch with key held in start. Keep checking the start wire along the start circuit. Not sure how the start relay is wired into the circuit, would have to see a diagram, but if you pull the relay out and use a test light or multi meter, could check for power on the terminals where relay plugs in. Key off, should have one terminal that is hot. With key held in start, at least one other terminal should also be hot. This would be the start wire out of ignition switch sending a signal to the relay.

Do warning lights and gauges come on, when key is turned to on?
If yes, check for power on the small wire at starter solenoid mounted on the starter with the key held in start. If power at the solenoid, take starter off and test for a bad starter or solenoid. If no power at solenoid when key held over to crank, work back to the switch in the start circuit-starter relay, clutch or neutral safety switch,-power from the start wire out of switch is not getting to the starter solenoid.
If no warning lights or gauges work with key in on position, power is either not getting to switch (bad maxi-fuse or fuse link, or bad battery connections-clean and tighten, recheck)-or the switch itself is not sending power out. Check if battery is charged up. Check all connections and grounds for loose, poor connections.
The start circuit starts at the battery, then to ignition switch, then out of ignition switch on the start wire to the clutch switch (or neutral/park on automatics), and on , ending at the starter solenoid on the starter. Somewhere in your starting circuit, power is lost. Start at the battery-check charge, check connections, check ignition switch.

2005 Saturn Ion 2 Problems: It wont turn over or anything no noise etc.. Replaced the ignition switch and nothing. Starter checked out. So what could be the problem?


With key on, do the warning lights and gauges come on? If yes, next is to check the start wire from ignition switch to the starter solenoid. The only time this wire has power is when the key is held in start. One could pull off the small wire at the starter solenoid on the starter, and check if it has power with the key held in start. If it does have power, may be a problem with the starter solenoid. But if no power on that wire, you will have to trace the wire from switch to starter. Not a direct path to the starter though. There is a park/neutral safety switch that the wire has to pass power through, so in park or neutral you would have power in and power out of the switch. If you have a manual transmission, substitute a clutch safety switch (or clutch inter-lock switch) for the park/neutral switch. If you have this, easy to check for power in/power out of the switch, with clutch pedal depressed and key held in start.
There is also likely a starter relay in the circuit. If you can find it and if you have a test light or voltmeter, you can do some checking here to see if your start wire still has power. Pull the relay out, key off. See if any terminals the relay plugs into has power. May or may not, depending on how the wiring is set up for the relay. But now if you hold key in start and check all the terminals, there should be at least one (maybe two) terminals that have power, where they didn't have before. That tells you the power is still getting out to this point.
If you have a theft deterrent system, and it is activated, at this relay is where it may come into play-not letting power pass through to the starter solenoid on the starter.
Sorry I do not have a wiring diagram so could give you more specifics. Hope you kind of get the picture, though. Large maxifuses pass power to the ignition switch. The switch sends the power out as demanded. The start wire out of the switch going through the start circuit to the starter solenoid only has power when the key is held in start.

I have a 92 sentra lights come on but when i turn key nothing happens. Starter good ,relay good, head lights don't dim when you turn key . Car won't turn over at all


If by lights, you mean the dash lights come on, then ignition switch must be getting power. If dash is not working with key on, check the 30 amp fuse link which powers the ignition switch.
If switch is good and starter is good, the start wire from switch goes to, if automatic, to inhibitor relay (the park/neutral function) and then to starter. There is also an inhibitor switch on the shifter or on the transaxle that turns on the inhibitor relay when key is on and shifter in park or neutral. The inhibitor switch is powered by a 10 amp fuse D.
If you have a manual transmission, the start wire from ignition switch goes to the clutch interlock relay and then to the starter. This relay is turned on by the clutch interlock switch on the clutch pedal.
You can check for power on either relay, the inhibitor relay or the clutch interlock relay, with a test light. Pull the relay out, have the key held in start position. Now both relays would have power showing on two terminals where the relay plugs in. If inhibitor relay only has power on one terminal or no power at all, either ignition switch is not sending power or fuse D is out or the inhibitor switch is not working right. If clutch interlock switch does not have power on two terminals either the ignition switch is not sending power or the clutch interlock switch is bad.
If the relay checks are good, check for power on the small wire to starter with key held in start. If you have power there, the starter solenoid must be out.

No crank


Something wrong in the start circuit. The fact that dash lights come on indicates the ignition switch seems ok.- power is getting to it and exiting it.

The next place to check is the starter: before taking it off and have tested, do this quick test: when the car won't crank over, pull off the small wire on the starter solenoid-mounted on the starter-and see if that wire has power when the key is held in cranking position. You will need a helper to hold key in start, and an inexpensive testlight or volt meter to see if the wire has power.
This wire is the signal wire from the ignition switch to activate the solenoid and allow battery power to turn the starter motor on.
If the wire has power and still no crank, then the starter or solenoid is the problem, assuming battery and cables are good and connected tight. Pull the starter off and test it. If starter is good, probably the solenoid.
If the wire has no power when key is held in crank, the problem is in the circuit from the ignition switch to the solenoid-includes the neutral safety switch, maybe a starter relay, too. One would begin testing by checking for power on the start wire exiting the switch with key in cranking pos. If good there, test the neutral safety switcfh. If you have manual transm, the switch would be on the clutch pedal. If automatic, have a shop locate and test that.
Good luck- often, not always, it is the starter or solenoid. But do that check for power at solenoid , first.

Starter continues to run even with the key off


You need to test the trigger wire on the starter to see if it is still getting power when the key is off, and the starter is cranking. The trigger wire is the small terminal on the starter that gets power with the key in the crank position. If the trigger wire has power with the key off the problem is in the electrical system, probably the ignition switch. If the trigger wire doesn't have power and the starter continues to crank, with the key off, the problem will be inside the starter.

No starter response when key is turned over. new starter and battery. all fuses and relays good. only thing left is ignition switch?


The starter is malfunction at this time. it could also be a ignition issue as well. here is a quick starter test procedure that will help you troubleshoot a bit.

Step 1
Check for 12 volts on the large wire attached to the top terminal on the starter relay. It should have battery voltage. If not, the battery, terminals or wire is bad.


Step 2
Check the small wire on the solenoid for power when the key is in the start position. Remove the small wire on the solenoid and have a helper hold the key in the start position. Check the wire for battery voltage. If there is voltage, the starter is bad. If there is no voltage, replace the wire.


Step 3
Check the fuse in the fuse box under the hood on the left fender well. If it is good, check the relay by pulling it out and checking for power at one terminal with the key off. If there is no power, the problem is in the fuse box between the fuse and the relay. If there is power, have the helper hold the key in the start position once again and check for power at another terminal from the ignition key. If there is power, the relay is bad. If there is no power, the starter circuit is suspect.


Step 4
Check to see if there is power to the neutral safety switch if there is no power at the relay. Use the voltmeter to check for power with the key in start. If there is power going in, check for power going out. If there is no power going in, the security system or ignition switch is suspect. If there is power going in and none coming out, the switch is bad. If there is power coming out, the problem is between the neutral switch and the relay.


Step 5
Remove the cover on the bottom of the steering column. Check the solid yellow wire for power when the key is in the start position. If there is no power, the ignition switch is bad.
