Electric push button 4x4 transfer case

I keep having problems with my push button automatic 4x4 transfer case going out. Ever since I bought it at 2 miles it has been doing it. I have taken it in the shop over 6 times and they have only really worked on it twice because they can't get any error codes to tell them what to do to fix it. Since it was under warranty they wouldn't try to fix it if it didn't have an error code and now that it is out of warranty they will but they **** at trying to fix it but want to charge me for it everytime they look at it. I have spoken to several people that own a GMC pickup and everyone of them say they have had the same problem. Why don't they have a recall on this product?

    "Service 4wd message" appeared after getting a car wash. The 4x4 pushbutton will not activate the 4x4 auto or 4x4 high or 4x4 low. Thankfully 2x4 still works. No error codes found. The local repair shop retrieved code CO306 Motor A-B circuit malfunciton from their testing system but could not locate the source of the problem. I'm still two wheeling....

I work for a GMC dealership....and I have an 03 sierra with auto 4x4 and i work on these every day....and im not seeing this common problem ur talking about.....sounds like its the mode switch or the tccm.....would need more info to diagnose

My ford ranger just did the same thing went boggen now my four wheele would not com out 2days later it did now 4x4 coms on but will not go i 4low.. i dont know what it is yet

YA definatly your think is gonna way on renovation but why company not taking action even i heard a same problem for GMC pickups from you 3rd time.

try to reseell your pickup cause if prob with 4*4 than its not a perfect design for 4*4 driver willl looosing their fun * love for 4*4.

i m suggesting to you for try some new model if warrenty & you can or try to install another brand for automatic transfer

4x4 low light on car will not move


The electronic module (located behind the glove compartment) controls the operation of the transfer case in response to inputs from the electric shift motor, 4x4 mode switch, CPP switch, BPP switch, DTR sensor, throttle position output from the PCM, front and rear OSS sensors, and the VSS. The 4wd wont disingauge back to 2wd i jacked up driverside front tire while motor was running pushed 2wd button turned wheel till it catches wont come out


Check the fuse to the 4x4, if the fuse is good then check the 4x4 electric motor actuator on the transfer case. You should hear it work from 2wd, 4hi to 4low and back to 2wd with the push of the switch. if you don't hear it working then check the wire harness at the actuator motor, look for any damages like corrosion or cracked wire connector clips. If the 4x4 actuator is working on the transfer case. There is a vacuum switch on the top of the transfer case, driver side but when that fails, your front hub stay's locked in the on position. Good luck and keep me posted and hope it's a simple fuse that has gone bad. You can pick up all these parts at Auto Zone or Parts Source and they will have the step by step instructions for you to get the job done with common tools. Replacing the vacuum switch on top of the transfer case take about 15 min to replace if you don't have to jack up the Jimmy if not 30 min if you have to jack it up. Be safe and keep me posted, be glad to know your go it working again.

Pushed button...no light & no 4wd


Check the fuse to the 4x4, if the fuse is good then check the 4x4 electric motor actuator on the transfer case. You should hear it work from 2wd, 4hi to 4low and back to 2wd with the push of the switch. if you don't hear it working then check the wire harness at the actuator motor, look for any damages like corrosion or cracked wire connector clips. If the 4x4 actuator is working on the transfer case, then the front hub 4x4 actuator may have gone bad and that's located on the front differential. It's common for the clip there to corrode and break and is an easy fix with a new collar pin, at worst it's the diaphragm on the vacuum actuator that is located under the battery tray. There is a vacuum switch on the top of the transfer case, driver side but when that fails, your front hub stay's locked in the on position. Good luck and keep me posted and hope it's a simple fuse that has gone bad. You can pick up all these parts at Auto Zone or Parts Source and they will have the step by step instructions for you to get the job done with common tools.

My truck is stuck in 4LO and the button in the truck dont work.


If its a push button 4x4 take it to the shop its a VERY COMMON Problem dealing with the electric.Once you pay the $400 to get it fixed get rid of the truck and settle for a Jimmy/Blazer/Bravada with a floor shift 4x4..GM had problems with the push button 4x4.DONT DRIVE YOUR TRUCK IN THE MEANTIME.YOU WILL BLOW YOUR TRANSFER CASE RIGHT OUT OF IT!

Check 4 wheel drive light keeps coming on.....


Not true that GM dealer is the only one that can fix it . There are other independent repair shops that can, Transmission repair shops like AAMCO . You could too if you had access to a scan tool that can read DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes for the 4X4 system . There is a 4X4 control module that can store DTC'S when problems happen . When a warning like check 4 Wheel Drive light's up ,it's not meant for you to do anything except take it to the dealer ,well ,that's what the dealer would like .
Would need to know which 4X4 transfer case your's has ? Two speed manual , two speed selectable , two speed automatic ?

2-Speed Torque-On-Demand (TOD) Operation
The automatic 4-wheel drive (A4WD) system is a 2-speed torque-on-demand (TOD) operation that utilizes the following components:
  • Transfer case
  • 4-wheel drive (4WD) control module (integral to the powertrain control module [PCM])
  • Mode select switch (MSS)
  • Gearmotor encoder assembly (part of the transfer case shift motor)
  • Transfer case shift motor
  • Shift motor sense plate (part of the gearmotor encoder assembly)
Principles of Operation
Transfer Case Shift Motor The externally mounted transfer case shift motor, located at the rear of the transfer case, turns the shift cam assembly. As the shift cam assembly turns, it positions the reduction shift fork for desired transfer case operation. An integral position sensor in the shift motor provides shift motor position information to the 4WD control module.
Mode Select Switch (MSS) The push button MSS, mounted on the instrument panel, allows the operator to select the 4x4 Auto, 4x4 High, and 4x4 Low transfer case operating modes. The indicator light, on the instrument cluster push button, will illuminate only when the 4x4 Low position is engaged.

  • Matching tire sizes
  • Transfer case shift motor
  • Battery junction box (BJB) fuses:
    • 8 (30A)
    • 17 (5A)
    • 18 (20A)
  • Central junction box (CJB) fuses:
    • 12 (5A)
    • 24 (15A)
  • 4x4 module (PCM)
  • Wiring harness
  • Gearmotor encoder contact plate
  • Connector(s)
  • Circuitry
  • Mode indication switch (MSS)

  1. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  1. If the concern is not visually evident, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
    • check that the program card is correctly installed.
    • check the connections to the vehicle.
    • check the ignition switch position.
  1. If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool operating manual.
  1. Carry out the diagnostic tool data link test. If the diagnostic tool responds with:
    • CAN circuit fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to Section 418-00 .
    • No response/not equipped for 4WD module (PCM), Go To Pinpoint Test G .
    • System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs and carry out the 4WD module (PCM) self test.
  1. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the 4WD Control Module (PCM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics. 4WD Control Module (PCM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index

Transfer case motor for push button 4x4


i have a 1993 blazer 4.3 w code 4x4 with a 4L60 E . my truck wouldn;t go in 4 hi or low. so i changed the transfer case motor and it works fine now. If you turn the ignition key to on but not crank the engine and open the driver door and push 4 hi button, you should hear the transfer case motor cycle for 3 or 4 seconds every time you push button and the light will flash until it goes in 4wd If the 4 hi button light doesn't flash during cycle then it could be a bad switch. if the transfer case motor won't cycle it could be a fuse or a bad transfer case motor . 1996 Yukon 4X4 Electronic Shift on Fly.


I had the same problem with the shift on the fly push-button 4x4 on my 97 Suburban. GM Shop manual indicates that it could be due to an encoder error on the actuator motor. Try pulling the transfer case fuse to reset the transfer case control module. Wait at least one minute. Re-install fuse then re-try operation. Did it last week and that saved me a trip to the dealership and extensive troubleshooting.
