Valve Lash ADJUSTMENT 1.6L Engines NOTE: Measure valve clearance with the engine cold.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove the valve cover.
  3. Set the engine to Top Dead Center (TDC) of the compression stroke for the cylinder to be adjusted.
  4. Check the valve clearance. The valve clearance specifications are as follows:
    • Intake valves: 0.005-0.007 inches (0.13-0.17mm)
    • Exhaust valves: 0.005-0.007 inches (0.13-0.17mm)
  5. After adjustment, tighten the locknuts to 11-14 ft. lbs. (15-19 Nm).
  6. Repeat for each valve to be adjusted.
1.8L, 2.0L and 2.5L Engines The 1.8L, 2.0L and 2.5L engines utilize automatic hydraulic lash adjusters to maintain proper valve lash at all times. Periodic valve lash inspection and adjustment is not necessary or possible. overhead valves making noise like they need - prev.gif next.gif

It is probably the lifters. The lifters can not be adjusted. If it is a ticking sound then it is the lifters. You can run a higher weight oil to get them to quiet down. Like 10w 50.

Noise startup

Have your valve lash adjusted. Overhead cams need the lash done every 25-30K otherwise after some time they make a loud ticking sound. If the motor makes a "Knocking" sound, it may be a lower end noise, and there is no adjustment for that.

Have tappet noise is this common and how do I fix it?

Like the other expert said, we need details. The car makers do not build the cars to deliberately make noticeable noise; but some engines do run noiser than others.

If you are experiencing a sudden noise problem or one that gradually increased over time, then you may have adjustment needs or worn parts to be replaced. There are a few vehicles with old technology which had adjustable components.

And depending on whether you have overhead valves or overhead cams is another class of answers.

if its upper noise eg folowers and lifters if they are hydrolic lifters where these replaced are the cams ok if they are manually ajustable tappets these can be ajusted unless the following are goosed again the cams are pitted or mishapen will need new cam shaft the lifter rods are worn or week valve springs
but if they are hydrolic will have to be replaced inc cam shaft hope this makes sence ivan

2002 2.7 liter chrysler has a knock in the engine. sounds like it is coming from the valves

if the car has alot of miles on it , a little bit of top engine noise is nothing to worry about. if the car does'nt have alot of miles on it or the noise is real loud then you may have a lose valve or need rocker arm ajustment.

Ford valves are not adjustable, something is wrong. There are oversized pushrods that can be installed, but something is wrong to have valve noise, unless they backed off, somehow.

Tappet ajustments for a 350 chev small block intake and exhaust

to properly adjust the valves on this engine, it requires you to run the engine (now be ready to make a mess), and the nut that holds the rocker needs to be loosened until there is a tapping noise heard. once you hear that tightened it back down until there is no noise and then 1/4 turn. do this for each valve and enjoy.

If im correct i beleive those engines have hydraulic lifters in them. Thats probably whats making the noise. it's useless to replace them. It's not gonna affect your engines performance. just let it knock
