If you plan on doing your own maintenance, I highly recommend investing $20 US in a good after-market service manual. These can be bought at auto parts stores or ordered on line. Your public library might also have a copy.

I have a 96 jetta after replacing the water pump and upper radiator hose it over heats what could be the cause of my car over heating

Assuming the water pump is working correctly, my first guess would be air in the cooling system.
It has to be bled after repairs are made to get the air out and make sure it is full of liquid coolant.

96 JETTA TREK RUNNING HOT I HAVE REPLACED THE UPPER RADIATOR HOSE AND WATER PUMP WHAT COULD BE THE CAUSE OF THE OVER HEATING

Run the car and check your hoses, Most likely it is the thermostat sticking closed and not allowing water to flow back to the radiator if your top hose is not hot and you can squeeze it then it is your thermostat.

I can't find the thermostat on my 1996 jetta gls

On 1996 VW JETTA,The thermostat is located at the engine end of the lower radiator hose (passenger side). If the car has power-steering, then power steering pump and mounting bracket are to be removed to get to the thermostat housing. The thermostat is at the end of the bottom hose, in the water pump housing. Follow the lower radiator hose to the water pump housing. There are three bolts that are very difficult to navigate around. The thermostat is located behind those bolts.

alot of theses cars use the water pump as part of the timing and if you install it wrong you will have issues. go to mitchll1diy online and read up on the procedures. for 10 bucks its your safest bet.

tricky without the proper tool ,put a screwdriver across two allen keys while you undo the other and visa versa, dont slide it forward unless you are replacing the pump it will come undone you would find it easy with the proper vw water pump triangle
