The back up lights are controlled by the neutral safety switch. That is usuall mounted to the top of the transmission. It also has the shift cable attached above it so that will have to come off. Also when you put the new switch in it will need to be adjusted to insure tha car starts in park and nuetral.

SOURCE: reverse light not working
There is a sensor that connects to the light shifter which tells the car when it is in reverse. It may need to be replaced. You can remove it and check it with an ohmmeter or voltmeter to see if it is good or not.

i would get the diagram and take a look from there.
the safety neutral switch gets its power from a source and then lights up the reverse lights amongst other things.
alot of times vehicles are in accidents and wiring gets damaged.
make sure the reverse circuit is properly grounded.
