Question about 2004 Saturn ION

1 Answer

My starter will not engage, Electrical problem 2004 Saturn Ion 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 67000 miles i have a 04 ion redline, i parked it a year and a half ago in storage and recently went to start it but it will not crank over, we jacked it up and checked for power on the starter solenoid trigger wire in the ign. crank position, clutch pedal depressed there was no power present at the solenoid.. we jumpered the starter solenoid to verifiy starter operation, the starter engages and the engine cranks over ok.we found it odd there is power at the clutch pedal switch in the ignition (run) position.(should be hot in crank position?). we suspect the ignition switch is faulty, as the wiring integrity is good, there is no corrosion to be seen as i'm in a semi desert climate, and because this car started and drove and was parked in this location a year and a half ago. we did not have tools with us to dissemble column and do testing at ignition switch. that is our plan for tomorrow. this car has keyless entry but i'm not sure if there are ani-theft functions witch may be inhibiting the car from cranking over. we do not have electrical schematics. how can i diagnose the starter relay, where is the starter relay?(fusebox under the hood?) how do i verify the starter relay is getting a 12 volt signal from the control unit to crank? How or where do i pintest the 12 volt signal is getting to the control unit from ign switch and start safety neutral/clutch switch?.

i do not have access to a GM dealer, and there scanner. i need to get the car started to take it to a Gm dealer. i do not want to pay a 200km tow job.
Again, can you tell me where the starter relay is? and can i jump the connection at the start relay? to make the car start with the key in the run position, bypassing the ani-theft module.

It sounds like you have a anti theft system problem, the system can self test with a GM dealer scanner, but the problem must be duplicated by the dealer to fix it.

all the relays are located in the underhood relay and fuse center, black cover on it, the relays are marked, doubt that is the problem, good luck

as i work from home like 99% of the experts we don't have manuals for cars unless they happen to be our personnel stash, suggest u subscribe to the site called very cheap and access to all factory manuals with wiring diagram's, u may also find a used manul on ebay.

Is there a light that comes on that looks like a lock when the anti theft system is activated?

Yes that lock symbol is the indicator for the Security System, if the light is on the system is active and will prevent the car from starting. You have not fixed this yet then? Time to seek the dealers assistance for this problem, it requires a scanner to access the system functions and see what is going on with the Security system.

What caus upon acceleratione my 2004 saturn ion occasionally slip out of gear at a stop then it will jump back in gear upon acceleration

Check your transmission fluid level. It may not be possible for the average owner to do this, as Saturn transmissions are made to he used for 100,000 miles, then serviced for another 100,000.
So they don't have a dipstick .
If you have had any leaks under it, it most likely is low .

My key gets stuck in the ignition in my 04 Saturn ion when i turn the car off sometimes it comes right out & other times i have to put the car in park & unlock the doors & let it sit for a few...

Try pulling the steering wheel back and forth while trying to take the key out. Or, push forward and back on the shifter while it's in park, while trying to take the key out. This could be the steering wheel lock mechanism.

If you think it needs lubrication, try a LITTLE bit of graphite lubricant. Do NOT use WD-40.

2004 Saturn ION Transaxle humming noise varies with road speed

I would get a second opinion. A trans will not usually make loud niose and work correctly. A wheel bearing/ hub will make the noise you describe and is far less to fix. Good Luck
