How do you get or find heater core and take out

Well first of all put your car up on ramps and find out where your heater core lines go into the fire wall. More than likely its in the middle of the firewall which means its in the middle of the dash and you will have to remove the complete dashboard to get to it. the dashboard has to be completely unbolted not necessarily pulled out of car. You will have to unbolt the steering column to do this and let it drop till it stops on its own. I know the book time for a mechanic to do the job is like 14 or 1`5 hrs at about 50 bucks an hour for a $23 part. Do the math if you are mechanically inclined at all do the work your self and really you should not have to damage anything to do the job. Just remember how many bolts you take out and where they go. The worst part of the job is actually getting the cover off to the heater core. Mine was a pain there are so many bolts holding it up and just when you think they are all out the cover is still stuck on there and you find another bolt hidden. Good luck in your adventure because that is what it will be.

this is a very big job and its loads of work to do just to replace the heater core it is located inside the car and it will have 2 hoses that go through into the engine bay these are the feed and return for the heater core.

its hard work and you need to remember where everything goes.
your best option would be to get a workshop manual as this will give you pictures and step by step instructions.

you also need to think about what has caused the heater core to blow, is it down to the thermostat failing or the water pump or is it something worse such as head gasket, the heater core will not be the only reason it failed their will be something else that caused the pressure to build up and then blow the heater, its usually down to the thermostat staying shut so check this else you could end up doing the job again, but you need to remember it could also down to the head gasket failing.

Instructions

  1. Place the front of the car on jack stands. Block the back tires and set the parking brake. This is all to ensure the car doesn't move while you are working on it. For additional safety precautions, disconnect the negative battery terminal. This is necessary whenever working on the electrical components of the car and when working near the air bags.

  2. Remove the radiator cap and pressure cap (if working on a later model Corsica). Drain the coolant into a drain pan. If the coolant is still good, you can reuse it. If the coolant is discolored, has debris or other things in it, or has been leaking, replace it.

  3. Detach the heater hoses from the heater core. Inspect the hoses for damage or excessive wear. Replace them if they are damaged or too worn, as they will not seal to the new core if they are damaged. Inside the car, remove the console if it is going to hinder removal of the access panel, but this is not always the case.

  4. Lay a cloth, old towel or newspaper down inside the car to prevent staining from coolant that may spill. Remove the access panel located under the instrument panel. It is a black plastic panel, about 12 inches long, held in with six screws. Remove the heater core strap and remove the heater core.

  5. Install the new heater core and put everything back together in the reverse order you took them apart. Refill the coolant reservoir and lower the vehicle. Check the coolant level after a couple of days driving your Corsica to make sure it is at the correct level.

    then u will need to buy a used GM manual for the car, we have no illustrations just verbal instructions, here is a source to a used factory repair manual on ebay for less than $20.00, suggest u have one before u attempt this job.

Heater core leaking through floor vents.


Bad heater core you will need to replace it. About a 2 hour job, very easy to do:


Remove the HVAC module assembly. Refer to HVAC Module Assembly Replacement.
Remove the HVAC filter cover.
Remove the heater core/evaporator tube seals from the module.
Remove the heater core cover screws (1).
Remove the heater core retaining screws (1).
Remove the heater core retaining straps.
Remove the heater core.
Remove the rubber seals from the inlet/outlet pipes of the heater core.

Installation Procedure

Install rubber seals to the outlet/inlet pipes of the heater core.
Install the heater core to the module.
Install the heater core retaining straps.



Install the heater core retaining screws (1).
Install the heater core cover.



Install the heater core cover screws (1).



Install the heater core/evaporator tube seal from the module.
Install the HVAC filter cover.
Install the HVAC module assembly. Refer to HVAC Module Assembly Replacement.
