Question about 1998 Cadillac DeVille

1 Answer

1998-Deville-Northstar Engine. Just had my radiator, water pump, and thermostat replaced. I parked it in the driveway and when I came out, there was a puddle of red, rusty looking water under the right front tire. I drove it and it got to 242 degrees and started reading "Check coolant level" There was also a maple syrup kind of smell. What could the problem?

Hi, There are two metal pipes on that side of the engine that supply coolant to and from the heater core. One or both of the pipes may have rusted through. Need to pressure check cooling sysem and visually check.

What causes a northstar engine to overheat?

Northstars are notorious for having head gasket issues. I can not be sure without having the car in front of me, but I would suggest having them checked by a reputable shop. This is not an easy, or cheap job to have done.

I have a 1998 Cadillac Deville with a northstar engine. I am having an issue with overheating and water not being taken into my radiator. I was told when i first bought it that it had a blown head gas

If you bought a car with head gasket issues
replace them, don't use it & ruin the engine

We can't guess at all the cars possible problems

People sell a car when they don't want the expense
of fixing it

The type problem is best left to a person that works on their
own vehicles & gets it cheap, knowing they have lots of
work to do every were ,to restore many things

Keeps running hot replaced the water pump and the thermostat

The Northstar engine in this model is bad to blow head gaskets. Pressure from a cylinder will overpressure the coolant system and all the coolant will blow out. When that happens the engine will overheat. I fixed mine but it cost about $1500 in parts and tools and 5 weeks. If your coolant level is fine, check your fans and your radiator. One fan will come on when the AC is on or around 230 degrees F I think-They are designed to run hot.

Need to replace thermostat, and new radiator cap. Have any instructions?

Assuming you have the Northstar engine.....

The thermostat in the northstar engine is located at the bottom radiator hose (unlike most conventional cooling systems), the hose connects into the housing where you will also find the water pump.

You will need to remove the air filter housing and air duct to gain easy access to the thermostat.

Remove the hose from the housing, then remove the two bolts on the flange, the thermostat can then be pulled out.

Take note of the orientation of the thermostat as you remove it.

The thermostat in the Northstar engine is a duel action device.
One end of the stem is the Thermostat(obviously) and at the other end is a spring loaded pressure valve(the thinner end).
Make sure the thermostat end is nearest the rubber hose and the pressure valve end is in towards the engine.

Don't forget the new gasket when you install your new stat, you may have to order this separately.

There is no radiator cap.The only cap is on the purge tank and these are quite cheap to buy and easy to replace.

Need to know where the thermostat is on my 99 deville

Hi,
The thermostat is located in a housing attached to your engine, where the top radiator hose is connected to that housing.
I hope this helps...

Engine over heats 2000 cadallic deville northstar engine

flush your radiator first.with the thermostat out you should see the water moving if not bad water pump.this engine needs the thermostat to function properly and either a 50/50 coolant or straight coolant so it does not boil over.also make sure your fans are coming on

Replaced water pump. thermostat. radiator, filled with dex col, still overheating This is a 2001 Cadillac Northstar engine

Try backflushing,if this doesn't solve the problem,..then it could be the distributor, they can make the car run hot if the are going out.
