Had the same problem a few months back. right next to your stick shift [automatic] there is a little cilrcle. pop that peice of plastic out and stick a screw driver streight down. there is a little flapper that is conected to your breaks by a cable. it wont let you take the car out of park without your foot on the breaks, the cable may be broke. if you push the flapper down with the screw driver then you should be able to get the car out of park. if that works you know that your cable from breaks to that flapper is bad. i didnt replace mine i just drive around with a screwdriver stuck in the hole. you kindda have to fish around with the screwdriver to get it in the right spot but that should solve your problem. i pulled up to the pumps to get gas and when i went to leave the car wouldnt go out of park, so some guy came and showed me what to do and it has worked fine sense. good luck

This problem sounds like you dislodged the switch on the brake pedal lever. You need the signal to unlock the vehicle from Park. You will probably find that the Brake lights do not work when you press the brake pedal.

Now if the switch is good, you probably broke the fuse feeding power to the switch. You can get a wiring diagram online by running a Websearch or going to Autozone.com and registering your car. This site has a HELP section at the bottom of the page and you would need to toggle between free and pay info.

1998 ford escort cannot shift out of park. And has no brake lights. The fuses and bullbs seem to be ok,also the two switches on the brake peddle.

check the brake switch above pedal and brake light relay in engine compartment relay box.

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r6053280-lights_out_lights_not_out_bulbs_ok . These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

My car is an automatic and it won't shift gears. I pulled my car out of the garage and put it in park and now I can't shift gears. What is the problem?

The brake pedal has a switch that has to compress to let you engage the shifter, it's a safety thing. So in order to shift into gears the brake has to be applied. The switch could be defective.

Automatic ford escort 1998 will not shift out of "park"

There is a switch between the brake and the transmission. I forget what its called but unless you have your brake pedal pressed your car will not shift out of park. If you do have your brake pedal pressed there may be something wrong with the sensor.

'99 Ford Escort...won't come out of park...it starts and runs...won't shift

Make sure the brake lights work if not then its a fault with the switch or a fuse. If they are then possible fault with release solenoid at lever, though i would reckononit being brake light switch

Good luck davelee
