It is the number 1 position that does not work but the other positions work including 5. Would you replace the resistor?

We do have a resistor off another Pontiac that is still good.

It is probably the switch. The switch has resistors for different speeds. Sometimes when the resistor goes out then that speed won't work. So it is probably the resistors on the 5th level. You can get a new switch at the salvage yard pretty cheap.

Either the fan motor is bad, something is jammed in the motor housing, a/c fan relay is bad, or the cluster that controls the climate control is unplugged or bad.

I would check all fuses associated with the HVAC, if all fuses are good and you are sure the new part you bought is good then the problem would be in the control unit.

01 grand.prix ac fan switch only works on high. has a duel temp controller when you turn fan off the only way fan comes back on is to move the temp controller levers

Hi!!
When the Blower Motor Resistor (controls blower speeds) goes bad, the blower motor works only on HIGH SPEED. REPLACE IT.
BLOWER MOTOR RESISTOR Removal & Installation
  • Disconnect negative battery cable.
  • Remove right lower instrument panel insulator panel.
  • Disconnect blower resistor connector located behind right side of dash.
  • Remove blower resistor screws and blower resistor.
To install, reverse removal procedure
Good Luck!! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa!!

Check for power at the HVAC CNTRL fuse with the blower set at any speed less than high speed. There should be power anytime the key is in the run position. If there is no power turn off the blower. If there is power with the blower off you need an ignition switch. The ignition switch is what supplies power to the lower speeds.

Wires need to be tested at certain points to find out whats going on. It could be as simple as a bad ground somewhere. This needs to be looked at by someone with experience so that more damage is not done. Hope this helps.
