Probably dropped a tumbler inside ign. cyl. Call a reputable locksmith to replace it or take it to the shop.

The security, antitheft or lock picture/icon is a visual indication that something in the car's antitheft system is failing. In most GM cars and trucks there is a hidden system that most people are unaware even exists. From the moment you put your key in the ignition, there begins a constant line of communication between your key's security chip or transponder, to the ignition's lock cylinder, and then to the car's TDM (Theft Deterrent Module). These 3 parts are in CONSTANT communication. If the key is in the ignition, then these parts are sending signals to each other. The security light illuminates when that signal gets broken, even just for a second. When the signal breaks, the car misinterprets this as an attempt at theft and goes into antitheft mode. The car thinks its being stolen or hotwired because it is not getting that signal from YOUR specific key. This is why the security light turns on and shuts down your vehicle. This link explains it pretty well.

Van was stolen, key colum broken, keys gone, cant afford to replace, help please. I can get the radio on.

This may be related to the antitheft system The system is known for turning off the starter and/or injectors when it fails. Is there a light on the dash that says SECURITY? This is a common problem worth looking into. http://www.diy-gm-security.com/

1993dodge colt, 1.8 L . At idle revs up and down , then stalls. Problem started after battery was drained from lights being left on.

You probably need a reset......turn the key to the acc. position, do not start the car.....Allow it to sit in that position for approx. 5 minutes....Turn key to off position. Allow to sit for approx 5 minutes...Try starting the engine now, should have reset. If not successful try a couple of times....

Why does my 2005 chevrolet classic theft system keep coming on and then the car won't start afterwards unless reset by turning the key to ACC for 10 minutes then the car starts?

If you have a spare set of keys try using the different key. The identity chip in your key may be shorting.

Otherwise the "Reader" in your ignition switch may be cutting out. This puts it into an activation loop.

How do you remove the a bad ignition switch that only turns to the acc?

not really a solution but a temp fix, I had the same problem just this past Friday was out shopping and went to leave and the key would only go to acc.
after trying for about 5 min I took my 2008 4 runner key and inserted it an then when I went back to my 2000 tundra key it turned right over. thinking that 1 of the tumblers was stuck. going to try shooting a little wd40 In there to maybe lubricate it a little. I haven't had it do it since but might save you some work and money! hope this helps!

Ignition switch won't turn, locked

tumblers in the ignition switch and/or thew key itself is worn down and not pushing the tumblers into correct position. Only fix is to get a new switch assembley or try a fresh cut key.
