Question about 2001 Dodge Caravan

1 Answer

The shop tells me I need to replace the Front Sway Bar Bushing links. Is this a safety issue that needs immediate attention. My 2001 Dodge Caravan has 142,000 miles on it and the tires are in good shape.

Sway bars eliminate body roll not a large safety issue but worth repairing the links for extra stability.

Safety says i need sway bar bushings.what and where are these?

the sway bar is a bar that runs acrossed the front of the van from strut to strut. It is bolted to the cradel and then has links that run from the bar to the strut to increase stability. The sway bar bushings are rubber mounts that hold the bar down to the cradel. The bar runs though the mounts one each side where the bar and the cradel meet. If they are wore out you will normally hear a clucking noise from the front end when you hit bumps. To remove and replace them there is two bolts that hold a steel cap on top of them on each side. Remove the cap from both sides then the rubber mounts will have a split in them so you can get them off the bar. To install them is just the reverse of the removal. Good luck! 4 thumbs up is appeciated if this helps.

I replaced both sway bar links as well as the bushings this past summer and things are still quiet. I had the same clunking noise as well when going over bumps (Drives you crazy!). Did you try changing the bushings as well? They are $16 for a set of Moog bushing at O'Reilly's. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/MOO0/K7406.oap?year=2001&make=Dodge&model=Grand%2BCaravan&vi=1400027&pt=02972&ppt=C0106

What tools are needed to replace the front sway bar links on a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan? It's FWD. The parts are called sway bar repair kits.

I just changed mine this weekend. You need an 18mm deep socket for the top of the link as well as a T40 Torx socket. You will need a 18mm regular socket for the bottom of the link.

I just replaced the tortionbar rod to the shock tower. The oise still exists like a bad ball joint or a wheel bearing when I hit a small bump. Can the rack steering system make a bad noise?

These vans are notorious for this noise. You are on the right track so far.
But not only do the sway/stabilizer links (what you replaced) wear out easily but also the rubber bushings where the sway bar is attached to the frame.
You will need to jack up and safely support the front end. Follow the bar until you see the brackets that hold the bar to the body/subframe. Look to see if the bar has been moving inside the bushing.
Sometimes it's hard to tell when its lifted in the air as it puts a little twist in the bar.
Often you can easily repair these tightening them up by adding a strip or two of a rubber inner tube. Actually I believe it is a better repair than new bushings in some cases because the bar can wear smaller too. Cheap fix, just a little time to loosen the bolts add the rubber strips, tighten the bolts and no more noise.

Sway bar bushing and links

It will allow extra sway which will alter your handling in the near future and in time will do damage to the rest of the suspension.

Autoparts store should have them, if not dealer will, and are fairly easy to change. Garage should not charge more than 1/2 hr. labor each.

Had similar problem with 2003 Dodge GC. Replaced the parts you mention + rack & pinion, then to fix the now noticable whining noise, replaced power steering pump and pulley. Fortunately was under an extended warrentee at 46k miles.
