The key does not turn at all. The vehicle started when we held the shift column in park or nuetral. What do you think?

This is something that you have probably tried. But just want to make sure that you have tried it. When the steering locks, if the front tires are in a bind then the key won't turn. Try turning the wheel while you turn the key. Usually if the key won't turn it is pressure against the ignition switch or the tumblers in the ignition. So lets start with the free solution first. Just try turning the steering wheel to take pressure off of the ignition. Let me know if this helps. If not I will go into replacing the tumblers.

Is the key not turning at all? Or does the key turn and it just won't start?

Yes. For sure there is something wrong with the shifting column. But I am not totally convinced that it is keeping your key from turning. It very well could be the problem. But usually you can manually turn the column like you described before to get the key to the ON position. But then again, it may be beyond that stage. So it is very possible that it is the shifting column.

Then yes. I do think it is your column that is the problem. Probably that easiest and cheapest way to fix it is to go to the salvage yard and get the whole column. They are not too hard to change. You should be able to get one the same color for around $75. Just make sure to disconnect your battery while changing.

Won,t shift out of park?

Check to see if you have brake lights if not fix the switch on brake pedal. If yes you need to look at the shift interlock system, normally a little white box just below the key on the column. On fords you can put key in and turn a little bit so it's straight vertical and shift to neutral then start it. Your problem is with the shift interlock system that gets activated with the press of brake pedal

What is a neutral safety switch?

The Neutral Safety switch monitors the position of your gear selector lever and either interrupts or allows the starting circuit in your car or truck to do its job. On newer vehicles it may also monitor the position of the brake pedal to make sure that the vehicle is in park or neutral AND that your foot is on the brake.

If your vehicle is equipped with a neutral safety switch, it should NOT start UNLESS the transmission is in Neutral or Park. On the other hand your vehicle SHOULD start when it is in Neutral or Park. If your car will start in Neutral but not in Park, you have a bad switch. Also, if your car or truck will only start by turning the key to the start position and wiggling the gear selector lever, your neutral safty switch is in need of replacement.

The nuetral safety switch is usually found near the gear shifter. If your car has the gear shift on the column, then the neutral safety switch is usully mounted on the steering column near the brake pedal. On floor mount or console mount vehicles you will find the nuetral safety switch mounted near or on the shifter mechanism.

My suv won't shift gears what can i do?

if the shifter is moving then it is probably your trans. but if the shifter is not moving from the park possition (if it is an automatic) check to see if brake lights are coming on if not check fuse for brake lights,it also controls your shift lock.try turning key to possition before lights come on dash board and moving shifter into nuetral pos. then start car and put into gear give that a try, if it does the shift lock isn`t working.

Shiter

couple things apply brake when shifting out of non running vehicle or you should be able to with key still on the on position with engine not running apply brake shift down to nuetral then start vehicle up with applied brake shift into park

if this isnt working then inside key cylinder the k.c. pin that locks the column is broke or wore down you should be able to at least get the blazer into neutral to shift out back to park

under neith the blazer there is a saftey shift module that if this is worn it wont let you shift or you can shift with dead engine and no brake applied this might need to be replaced by tranny tech

the other way to unshift the shiter is have a buddy with you this is a little finness in what i say next
chock the wheels from rolling on a hill disengage the saftey brake now start pushing on the vehicle with engine off back and forth this disengages the 4x4 locked hubs gotta roll back a little but be sure not to let vehicle run over buddy

these are just a couple things off the top of my head that i can think of since im not actually there to see in person i hope this helped
