Question about GMC C1500

1997 GMC C1500 pickup 2-wheel drive. Brake pedal has too much freeplay in it. I have replaced all the shoes/pads and rotors and drums and also the master cylinder. I am not sure how to take out the freeplay in the brake pedal. I am assuming the pedal can be adjusted by way of the pushrod that pushes on the booster but I would like to sure before I dig into it. Thank You!!!

    Does this have abs? I have run into the situation where if the hydraulics were opened such as the master the abs needs to have the dump valves opened to release air. You can do this by activating the abs on a surface such as dirt of gravel just a scenerio that will allow the abs to activate.

If you still have that much play you may have to replace the booster as well. If you go to changing the pushrod it may add too much pressure to the booster and make it fail.

try adjusting the rear brakes up correctly
the spring that holds the shoes together pushes all the brake fluid back into the reservoir and each application has to move the shoes back into contact with the drum
that is enough to get the pedal close to the floor

Lift the front of your Ford F-250 off of the ground using a jack and jack stands. Remove the wheels from the Ford with a lug nut wrench to prepare the truck for servicing. 2 Open the hood on the engine compartment and take the lid off of the master cylinder that bolts to the brake assister on the driver's side firewall.3 Remove the hex-head bolts on the back of the brake caliper with a socket. With the bolts removed, pull the caliper off of the Ford's brake rotor.4 Pull the old brake pads out of the caliper and discard them. Squeeze the brake piston back into the backside brake caliper with pliers, and then insert the new pads into the brake caliper.5 Pull the rotor cap cover off the middle of the rotor with a screwdriver and use a socket to remove the nut located behind the cover.6 Pull the rotor off of the wheel spindle.7 Remove the old wheel bearings from the brake rotor and insert them into the new rotor. If the old wheel bearings are worn, replace them with new bearings.8 Slide the new rotor onto the wheel spindle and secure it using a bolt and socket. After you tighten the bolt, press the cover back onto the rotor.9 Place the caliper on the rotor and secure it with a socket and hex-head bolts. 10 Duplicate the process on the passenger side of the F-250. 11 Close the master cylinder after putting the wheels back on the Ford and lowering it to the ground. Press on the brake pedal to seat the pads against the rotor
Replace the F-250's Rear Brakes 1 lift the rear of the Ford F-250 off the ground with a jack and jack stands. Remove the wheels from the Ford with a lug nut wrench.2 Place a strip of paint on the back of the brake drum and rear brake drum cover so you can position the brake drum orrectly when you put it back on. If you plan to install new brake drums on your Ford F-250, skip this step. 3 Place the brake drum puller on the brake drum and pull the drum from the wheel hub. The method for attaching the brake drum puller depends on the brake drum puller that you use. 4 Remove the springs that attach the brake shoes to the wheel hub by pulling them off with pliers.5 Lift the old brake shoes off of the wheel hub and place the new brake shoes on the wheel hub. Secure the new shoes with the springs.6 Pound the brake drum onto the axle hub with a rubber mallet.7 Duplicate the process on the passenger side of the Ford.8 Put the wheels back on the F-250, lower it to the ground and, then press on the brake pedal to seat the shoes against the brake drum.

Did complete brake job on 1997 Ford Escort wagon no abs rear shoes, drums, lines, wheel cylinders,even changed the block at the rear were the lines go in & out of. Front lines hoses pads, caliplers...


is brake pedal hard to push down without engine running ,if so proceed to step two and thats to start engine and then push on brake and if pedal softer to push then the servo is working ,now if excessive pedal travel with engine running then remove the rear drums ,make sure the outside lip is cleaned out and then adjust the brake shoes manually till they rub when you turn the drum ,this will cure it but remember that it has to bed in of course new pads brake disks ,new shoes and drums it has to bed in so give it a chance .

I put new brakes in my saturn. i put new front calipers,rotors and pads and power bleed front only. i also put new brake pads in rear but did not replace drums.after all that i can't get a hard brake...


try adjusting the rear brake shoes but.....spin the rear wheels first is u get the feeling of the shoes grabbing then releasing ( the tire gets loose then tight as u rotate it) u will need to have the drums cut on a brake lathe or replaced...when u have this done , then adjust the rear shoes until u get a slight drag on the rear wheels..go pump the brake pedal to seat the shoes if the wheel spins free adjust the shoes more an repeat until they have a slight drag after pumping the brake pedal

When you apply the brake you can hear a gear grinding sound ,and you can fill it in the pedal as well.


pad or shoes grinding into rotors or brake drums...replace brakes and turn rotors and or drums if within tolerace..if not..replace them

Hi,
You will have to check each brake caliper for pressure when the brake pedal is applied. You may have a sticking piston in one of the brake calipers.

This will cause a spongy pedal.

Not likely any bearings...
Most likely the brake pads are worn down to the metal rivets that hold the braking material to the shoes (or pads).

The rivets have made a "rut or ridge" in the brake rotor or the brake drum.

If the sound is in the back, then the brake shoes must be replaced and at least one drum has to be replaced.

If the sound is in the front, then the brake pads must be replaced and at least one rotor has to be replaced. The front rotors can be viewed easily with a flashlight, shining through the wheel.

The read drums may be very difficult to remove; patience.... and care...

Spongy brake pedal


I have a 2001 Chevy 1500 4 X 4 that recently had all new pads, rotors, and calipers installed. Since then my brake pedal goes almost to the floor before I get any brakes. I took it back to the shop and they bled the brakes with no better results. I bled them also with no results. I took the truck back and they installed a master cylinder with no results. It's now at the Chevy dealer and they say it's normal - BS! I had good brakes before I had all of the brake parts replaced, no one can figure it out. If you have a load in the truck or if you tow anything you better be looking at the ditch to avoid an accident. The original brakes would put you nose into the windshield and now I could stop it better the Fred Flinstone way. Anyone have an answer????????

are your rear drums set up? why did you bleed the brakes. when only when you installed new pads?
