At 207k miles I would not change anything. Just keep on doing what you have been doing and you should be ok. Changing things up now may cause you trouble and is not recommended. And congratulations on the 200k mile mark. Not many people care for their vehicle enough to get 200k+ miles out of it, GOOD JOB

I switched to the 15w40 diesel oil and my oil consumption dropped...

Believe it or not, it is normal for these engines to use about a quart every 2000 even when they are essentially new. Note that I said, "use", not "burn". The combination of higher compression and operating temperatures causes oil to pass through the engine. You might notice your tail pipes have a good coating on the inside. I managed to slow the process by converting to Mobil 1 0W40. I get much better performance and I only use a quart every 3500-4000.

Loud clicking from engine

Classic Trooper problem. You can get a lot of quiet(er) troublefree miles out of your Trooper with religious, regular oil changes. Isuzu is now advising the use of Mobil 1 0w30 synthetic motor oil, changed at 5000 mi intervals to quiet the lifter tapping that you're experiencing. If you're a DIYer, you can pick up 5qt jugs of this oil at Walmart for $23-$26. -Or, you can buy the basic oil change and provide your own Mobil 1 0w30 to the tech to keep the costs down.

It'll take 150-300 miles for the noise to settle down after the fresh oil change. Keep a close eye on your oil dipstick. As soon as you're coming close to a quart low, top it back up. The 3.2l motor will start tapping again when the oil level drops or is near the time to change. Forget the advice about the belt tensioner needing to be replaced. That is rarely the source of the noise. I have two Troopers, Christophe. They're the ones that aren't tapping like crazy at the traffic light. Enjoy your Troop. -Geoff

1998 trooper 3.5 l oil consumption

Hi there and sorry to say... I have a 99 trooper with the 3.5 in it and I took it to the dealer last year to get an O2 sensor installed. While I was there, I spent alot of time with the mechanic while he was working on my trooper....asking questions and so on. Well, one of my questions was the same as you asked and his response was, "the 3.5 came out and lots of people would drive them like most will now days and just put gas in them and go and never really check the oil till it's too late and the engine locks up".

Well that kinda scared me, especially since I had only had it for about 6 months. I felt like I had been taken! .. However, he said,"the gage will read properly, good pressure and bad. However, it will not alert you to low oil pressure, like an oil light or buzzer, so you really keep a watchful eye on it, along with checking the oil on at least a weekly basis".

That was a little over 2 years ago, June 2006 with 80K miles on her. I change the oil on a consistant bases and add oil on a weekly basis. Now she has over 150K miles on her. I feel confident that there is at least another 150K stress free miles to go.

Hope this helps!
