There is no switch from the tranny. There is a selenoid on the starter itself that engages the starter. Its not a switch though. Please rate answer!! Thank you

Do you know what the starter relay is ? Starter Relay
The starter relay:
  • is a mini ISO relay that switches power to the starter solenoid to engage the starter motor.
  • receives a START signal from the ignition switch.
  • is controlled by the powertrain control module (PCM).
Starter System - Operation
When the ignition switch is turned to the START position, the starter relay switches power to the starter solenoid causing the starter motor to engage as long as:
  • the digital transmission range (TR) sensor is in PARK or NEUTRAL.
  • the anti-theft system is operational.
  • Do you know what an automotive wiring diagram is ? How to use a test light or DVOM - digital volt ohm meter .

Not enough information to answer. Need manufacturer, year, model, engine size, 2WD/4WD/AWD, and Manual or Automatic transmission as applicable in order to answer the question.

VEHICLE RELAYS Testing from the relay base If you have a anti-theft system problem the engine computer - PCM will not let the starter engage . Using key start, instrument panel illuminates but why won't it turn over?

Dirty battery posts...(loose) or locked starter...sometimes you can tap the starter with a hammer to make it work one time to confirm...Hope this helps.

Car won't engage starter

At the starter relay, you have two red or purple wires, one goes to the starter and the other comes from a 30amp fuseable link. Is that fuseable link circuit hot ?
From the key switch, power goes thru the alarm relay, then the clutch safety switch or automatic selector switch, then to the starter relay. The fourth wire on the starter relay is a ground.
You should be able to put power to the starter relay on the white or yellow wire coming from the safety switch to make the relay engage.
My guess is something wrong with the alarm system.

I changed the motor and transmission from one to the other .I went from and automatic to a 5 speed manual changed motor harness now the car will not start turn key and nothing new battiery can you give me...

If you swapped out the auto for a manual trans the car might have a neutral start safety switch preventing the starter from engaging. This would not be something you would have on a manual transmission. Instead the manual would have the Clutch Safety switch which will only allow the starter to engage if the clutch is pressed in. On an automatic it won't allow the engine to turn over unless it's in Park or Neutral. I would locate the plug for the neutral start safety switch for the old automatic transmission and bypass it.

Im assuming this is manual transmission. Neutral safety switch is mounted on pedal assy bracket near pivot point of of clutch pedal arm. When clutch pedal is depressed it grounds and lets starter engage.

1997 jeep cherokee sport will not start with key. Replaced ignition switch but will only start when the relay is engaged from the PD box.

This could be a faulty park/neutral safety switch. This is a switch that is used to determine whether the car is in park or neutral before allowing the car to start. This prevents the starter from turning while the transmission is engaged, which would cause the car to jolt forward. It's usually an easy fix, located on the side of the transmission. Remove the wiring harness, and carefully remove the switch, they tend to be brittle. You can replace it with a new one, or clean your old one (if it stayed intact). Just disassemble the switch, and clean all the old dirty grease off the contacts, and use a good electric grade lubricant. Good Luck!
