There is nothing wrong with the lock,,,it is suppose 2 spin around if you do not put the key in correctly.

My 1997 bmw does the same , it is a security measure incase someone breaks into the car and tries 2 steal it by putting a screwdriver in the ignition ,,it just spins.

before putting yr key in the ignition, move yr steering wheel slighty so its not resting on the steering lock , put yr key in and turn , it does not spin

I removed the original ignition tumbler and ordered a new one from BMW and it should just pop right in but it will not lock in. Any advice or suggestions. Could it be a wrong part ( they look identical...

Hi Kevin,

If you removed the original tumbler check to make sure the alignment tab on the edge of the tumbler did not break off and stay in the housing. The tab is very small, about 1-2mm and the housing has a small indentation where the tab lines up, I also recommend making sure to use the removal tool or pin clip to install the replacement tumbler.

Does it behave the same when you flip the key 180 degrees and try it? These keys wear out and have to be replaced every 10-15 years. If you are lucky, you just have to replace the key with a fresh one, and not the lock. I have two '97s and both have needed new ignition locks and new keys in the past 5 years.
For the ABS light, look at all four wheel speed sensors, looking for physical damage to the sensor or its bracket or its wire, or bent or broken teeth on the reluctor wheel that the sensor reads. The wheel sensors are the part that takes the most abuse. If the ABS unit itself has failed, it will be gut-check time. How much do you really like having ABS on this 14 year-old car?

I started the car then the key just felt as if it wasn't connected to anything and the tumbler just spins. I had to pull the ecm fuse to shut the car off. Anyone have an idea what may have happened?

You did not mention your make and model, but this is not an unusual problem. I have replaced both the lock cylinders on my two 1997 328s.
I did a writeup on fixing this problem here: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/101-projects-discussion-forum-bmw-3-series-e30-e36-1982-2000/411889-tech-tip-ignition-lock-housing-replacement.html
You will need to paste this link into your browser to get rid of the carriage return in the middle of the address.

I need to disable my alarm on a 1997 bmw 528i.

Now im not sure since the manual says your model has the same alarm system as the 328i and on the 328i you can remove the module to disable by doing the following. you can unplug the control module. It is located under the glove box. Climb under the dash on the passenger side and remove a few screws on the trim panel under the glove box. Theres a black control module with a green connector. There should be a lock tab on the connector. press the lock tab and pull out the connector. The alarm should now be disabled. But if it has the special transponder key this may not work.
But if the only reason you want to disable it is because of the motion sensor setting of the alarm for no reason there is a solution for this. To disable the motion sensor, hit the lock button to arm, then hit lock button again within four seconds to disable motion sensor. Red light on rearview mirror should flash four times, then pause, then start flashing on regular intervals. this is most likely the reason if your having the issue where the alarm goes off every 20 minutes.
If you want to completely remove it below is a wiring diagram taken from the manual for you alarm system.
